Hello
Does anyone have any pictures/photos of any shops at The Gate Saltley or the shops just in Washwood Heath Road near the Gate. I would be very grateful to see any.
Thanks, WendyP

Hi wendyp

I can't quite get you into Washwood Heath Rd with the photo's (I must have another look as I thought I had a couple). These are the best I can do for now. I will have another look though.

Phil

Hi Phil

These are terrific, thank you so much. I had forgotten some of those shops. I do hope you can find some of Washwood Heath Road. I am putting together a collection and these will certainly go in it.
Many thanks, Wendy

Hello Wendyp this is my first message I have looked at the photos, they are amazing. I think there is a pub in one of the pictures, next to Abbots Cars Sales It looks so much Like the Whitehouse where mum and dad worked for many years. I may have a different name now.

Hi Lincolnann

Welcome to the site, as far as I am aware the pub in the photo is the Coachman's Arms. I have never heard of it being called any other name, but its possible it could have been a local name for the pub. I think the nearest "White House" was at Holburn Hill which would be over a mile away.

Welcome Lincoln:)

If you have any photos of the area it would be nice to see them.

Hello Lincolnann, I can remember that pub - it was on the way to town just before Saltley Bridge. But I cant remember its name. It was pulled down years and years ago. Such a lovely old black and white building too. I had the magnifying glass on the sign outside the pub just, but cant read anything except its an Ansells pub. I could make that out. The picture on the sign looks like a man or a boy. Perhaps one of the "Sherlocks" on this site will be able to help us.

According to the 1964 kelly's the official name was the coachmakers arms. I never knew the area myself though,

Mike if thats what is says in Kelly's then its obviously right. Probably had something to do with Birmingham Carriage & Wagon Works over the road,

Hi Phil,

Would that not have been Metropolitan Cammell Carriage and Wagon?

Kind regards Dave

Hi Phil Your are quite right, I have checked with my sister and she said it is The Coachmakers Arms, so I guess The Whitehouse was some sort of nickname used by my stepfather. I remember often standing outside there with a packet of crisps which had a little blue bag of salt in it, and a bottle of pop, probably Vimto or Tizer. It was so very smokey inside whenever the doors opened

This row of Co-op shops on Washwood Heath Road in Alum Rock sold everything during the sixties that you would find in a supermarket today plus drapery and dry cleaning.
