Shenton - coal merchant

star43

master brummie
My Gt Grandfather was a Benjamin Shenton who in the 1881 census was a labourer(aged 21) and in the 1891 census was a coal merchant and an employer, residence 117 Cheapside. Entry in the 1893 trade directory working from Fazeley Street railway station. I am trying to find out what happened in those 10 yrs and wondered whether he appeared in any other trade directories in the intervening years and if some kind person would mind having a look for me.
Thankyou

Remember the year of Kellys is the publication year and details would refer to year before.camp

Firm has disappeared by 1932 edition
He seems to have originally taken over the business (in Rea St) of James Howis, who was at that address as coal dealer in 1880 edition. He might have been working there as labourer before, or it might be a relation. Worth checking

Thank you so much for taking the time to look up all that information!! that has certainly filled in the gaps for me. Benjamin Shenton died in 1922 at the age of 62 so I don't know where the business went then as I am not aware of it being passed down. Thanks again for your help
