George Shannon b. 1893 abt. Stoke Newington, son of George Shannon. 1911 census he is a bandsman aged 18 serving with the 2nd battalion Worcestershire Regiment in India (Jhansi) but is listed as John Shannon (service number correct). George enlisted 11th August 1908 at Stratford, London aged about 15 as a boy entrant and gave his trade on enlistment as musician. Soldiers Died in the Great War1914-19 (part 34) Worcestershire Regiment give his residence as Cape Town, S. Africa (?). Other than 1911 census have had no luck finding information on him. Why was he in S. Africa? Any help regards further info on George would be most appreciated. Not on Stoke Newington War memorial. It was George’s misfortune to become the first fatality from the 2nd Battalion in the Great War.

On CWGC site it suggests George Shanon was an "alias". Says Foy was true surname .

Corporal
Reg no: 8785

Is that the right person?

No luck with the George Shannon who died.

However on the 1911 census in the Fulham district there are 2 George Shannons - b1853 Dublin & 1873 Liverpool. The younger is listed as a musician.

And it's possible that they both died in Cape Town.

There are a number of outgoing passenger records for George Shannons going to South Africa and one in 1909 for a J Geo Shannon. I can't see any other details.

Thank you all for trying but looks like a dead end on this one. I had no luck with census (other than 1911) or birth records.
Janice, service No 11365.
Residence shown as Cape Town, S. Africa on Soldiers Died info is baffling. George enlisted 11.08.1908 was still serving 1911 (census, India) so between 1911 and 1914 did he go to S. Africa?
