Back with the blokes and in the 1950's this was available from the barbers. A bottle of D.43 for the weekend sir?

I used all the shampoos you talk about to try to get rid of my greasy locks as a teenager - now I have the opposite problem - could do with some Vitapoint !
I used to use 'amami' setting lotion (too much and your hair was like barbed wire).
Also the hair lacquer bottles which were squirty ones and not the aerosols we use now. That lacquer certainly kept your hair in place, it settled onto your head and when you brushed it out it was like having huge clumps of dandruff. If you washed your hair in borax or a bath cube it softened the effect - until next time!

My Mother used to use Vasaline Hair Tonic.........I really don't know why.

I also remember having my hair washed with Derbac soap........it had a horid smell that lingered for days.

My first perm was with a Toni home perm...........never used a perm after that...........couldn't get the comb through my hair. The curlers were pink and blue rubbery ones or you could get plastic ones.

I remember my Grandmother having steel dinkie curlers in her hair every night when she went to bed....must have been most uncomfortable.

I remember Derbac too, it did have an awful smell. Wasn't that for nit's (I'm not being personal?) I did have nit's and thought that is why it was used on me. Those dinky curler's you mentioned must have played havoc with hair being made of metal. I do remember them, but pin curls were coming in by the time I was curling my hair. Vaseline hair tonic, must have been similar to the Silvikrin one. Those home perms were deadly.

I used to go to Raymond's hairdresser in Great Western Arcade in the 60's think his nickname was Teasy Weasy or am I having a blonde moment???

Hi Pam, I also went to Raymonds (Mr Teasy Weasy) a couple of times in the late 1950s, but in those days his salon was upstairs, next to the Odeon Cinema in New Street.

Judy

I went to Raymonds (Teasie Weasie) throughout the 60's and it was always next door to the Odeon and up the stairs. The chap who coloured my hair always sniffed constantly! He was there for years and years. Nearly every time I went, Noel Gordon was also having her hair coloured and she loved to hold court and be heard! She had them all running round after her.
I also used to bump into Jean ? who was on tele with those two puppets. I cant remember their names. She was a lovely lady.

"Woomerang, Boomerang- Look over there! It's Tingha and Tucker, the two little bears!"

A bit of silent film on a day out for them - is this the old Twycross zoo?

Now, shampoo.
I can't remember what we used to use when I was small, but since my teens I've always used ordinary bath soap.
My hair's silver grey now, not the very dark brown it used to be, and the kiss-curl has long gone, but it's still wavy if I let it grow long!

Right off thread now. I remember a boy at school named David Harrris singing and playing guitar to Puff The Magic Dragon on this show.

Ahh...... thats for the little boy that was!!

I loved T & T as much as my small son did, we watched them each tme they were on TV. Miriam.

As a few of you had mentioned Amami setting lotion on this thread I thought you might be interested to see this picture from the ad campaign in the 1950's.
It was in the newspaper today as the company has stopped making it. All that is left is whatever is on the shelves at the moment.
It says that back in the 1950's, Friday night was billed as 'Amami night' and that 'clever wives, wise to their husbands admiration, give themselves a regular quick set with Amami Wave Set'.
Polly

Ah that's a brilliant photo Polly. I remember learning how to do waves like that. I think I still have Mom's waving clips. I have used Amami many times and still do on some of my clients. I know a couple of them who will be upset by this news. Thanks for posting the advert.

Oh. I too remember Amami nights - all stopped for our shampoo and set. I still have two of my mothers "dinky curlers". My hairdresser has never seen anything like them. Do you remember them.? Miriam.

We had Vosene shampoo. I remember Armami setting lotion, and Rosedale lacquer that used to come in plastic sachets and you had to squeeze it into your own spray bottle - anyone remember that?
That Rosedale laquer wrecked the varnish on the furniture(dressing table) and Friday night Armarmi night, which was i guess getting your hair ready for the weekend

I used to use borax to wash the laquer out of my hiair. i used to have it set bouffant style every Saturday morning at a hairdressers on the Lozells Road. Number 8 bus to Carpenters Road and then walk up to it. The queues there every week were unbelievable, but it was worh it. Do you remember SULEO for nits?? It was an anagram of LOUSE

We used borax when we were young,it was good, suleo that makes me smile, when my son started school i bought that, because it was supposed to prevent nits, as well as eradicate so my son noticed the different shampoo and asked why i explained, walking to school first day with a group of new children and mom's and my son announced i have nits,i think they believed my explanation

Gosh........... just think.......... we only washed our hair once aweek!!! The young would through their hands up in horror if that was the case now- a- days.

I remember the Derbac soap and comb.

Hello Rowan i always washed my hair every day, once i was old enough to,and i remember people used to say to me your hair will fall out,Derbac soap,it done the job though lol

I,ve mentioned this before i used to love chasing the girl and giving them a kiss my mom stopped me doing it they kept giving me nits. Dek

Should have had your head shaved Dec,then the nits skid off.As for chasing the girls, wow! that was great fun...except, when you caught one and she had a runny nose.

Grew up using Sunlight on mine, still did right up till I was in my 20s with long hair past my shoulders. felt really clean, probably didnt smell as good as it did with Sunsilk, but there was always sunlight in our moms house so it was cheaper.
Never once had nits when I was a kid, nor did any of my brothers and sisters as far as I know, might be something in it... or were we just lucky ?
