Selina/ Sarah Turner 1868-1902

Oh my goodness those are quite the stories about Samuel Turner and his Father and brother. Seems a very dysfunctional past. Yikes! It does however speak to some of how my Great Grandmother came to settle in Canada as an orphan and "Home Child".

I assume your great grandmother was Ada Lavinia? When did she go to Canada?
I looked for her but, unless there was a name change to Florence (on 1911 census with Selina's sister) I couldn't find her.

Hi Janice,

Ada Lavinia Turner was her name. Florence was her sister (Florence stayed in England). The girls were split up. Ada and Samuel lived with the Turners before being turned over as an Orphan, and her sister Florence lived with Selina and her Sister in Law's Family (Annie and Samuel Whitehouse was the last name)? and family, from what have collected. (1901 census). At some point Selina/ Sarah was put in the Aston Union, Ederington workhouse. I am trying to find out if the rest of the family went as well, or if her Grandfather gave her to the orphanage when her father was imprisoned?

Also, Ada was sent to Canada aboard the ship Siberian in 1905 to Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. She spent her life about 1.5 hours away from that dock raising her family, in West Branch, Nova Scotia.

Not sure if this has been mentioned.

Though he appears to be listed as single when he married Selina, is it possible that Samuel was married before and also had another daughter?

On the 1891 census there are a Samuel & Mary (nee Dance) with daughter, Lily, living on Lawley St. he is listed as a hawker. Lily's birth is reg. Jun 1889 Bham. Samuel's father is listed as William on his marriage to Mary, not sure if his occupation matches.

On the 1911 census Jane Turner (Samuel's mom) is living with her son in law Christopher Hoar and also there is a Lily Elsie Turner of a similar age to the Lily in 1891, listed as a niece.

On the 1901 she is listed as Elsie L with Jane as a grand daughter.

Christopher John Hoar marries Samuel's sister Lily. She's not with them in 1911 but she is with her husband in 1921.

With the Fylde death reg. ruled out it's difficult to say where and when Samuel died. He doesn't seem to be on the 1939 register, so sometime between 1921 and 1939.

It's possible his mom, Jane, died in 1913 and was buried at Witton. There's an entry on findagrave but I'm dubious that that actually means there is a grave.

when did samuels first wife mary die ?

when did samuel and elizabeth die ? (like you mark i cant find them on the 1939 register they could have been anywhere) but again both could have died before 1939

City Bereavement site has Jane down as burial at Witton in March 1913 but that doesn't indicate if it was a public Grave or not.

quick update....still having no luck finding definate deaths for samuel and wife elizabeth or samuels first wife mary..
