Self pay?

terryb18

Gone but not forgotten R.I.P.
Went to B&Q today, I only bought a junior hacksaw, went to pay and I was directed to a machine where you scan it and put your money in a slot. What a performance,, I did'nt know what I was doing,it would'nt scan, I was holding people up and in the end I had to call someone over to help me. Why they could'nt have opened up another till is beyond me. Is this the future? doing more people out of work, I can just see it happening.
From there we went to Ikea, Wednesbury, what a marathon. A nice big place, did'nt buy anything, spent about an hour looking round and another blooming hour trying to find the way out.I would'nt like to be in there if a fire started, I could'nt see any exits.Oh,and they had these self pay machines as well.I have never been that keen a shopper, but this has put me off for life. Trouble is,we can't do without them, can we? I don't trust the internet enough yet. Probably never will do.

A sore point with me as well!

Seems like most shops and banks are going over to self service I suppose to save money on employing staff. The staff manning the self service points dont seem to realise that these machines are a relacement for their jobs and it will happen if all customers can be brain washed into using machines instead of being served by a real person.

Who ever thinks up these cost cutting schemes never think of the more vunerable or less able customers like the elderly or those with dyslexia etc who would have difficulty using these machines especially if they go wrong. Also for some people the only contact or person they can exchange a few words of conversation with during the day is the person servicing them to their few groceries etc.

Recently while I was waiting for the cashier in Natwest bank an assistant went along the line and was very insistant that I tried the new self service machines and when I refused and asked her what the banks policy was for the disabled or elderly person who were unable to use the self service facility her reply was, a good point, I will bring it up at the next meeting.

On principle I refuse to buy the product if it is only to be paid for by using a self service machine. I am minded of the machine breakers around the 1830's and I can now understand their point.

We will soon be a nation with no real jobs as they have either gone abroad or been taken over by machines.

Terry I totally agree with you regarding these self pay machines. I don't mind a bit of technology and have no problems using them however if that is the only way to pay at a store, especially in B&Q where they only have the self pay open, I always ask a memeber of staff to open a normal till so I can pay for my goods. It's my way of making a protest against these things so people who have difficulty using these things or are in fact frightened to use them may have a chance in to pay in the normal way.

Tesco are now starting to force people to pay at these things also by telling queuing people there is a free till open up at the other end of the shop, when you get there it is a self pay machine.

If in the future these self pay machines also carry you goods out to the car and maybe also escort you home to help cook some of the items you have brought I may then take an interest in them, until such times I must say a big no to them and help to keep a few people in employment.

Tesco would not force me to use one. No staff no sale!!

I went to B&Q in Kidderminster this week and the same thing happened. When I asked where the checkouts were, some guy just pointed at the scanning one. I wanted to pay cash and asked a young girl if they had staff on the tills. She ignored me. I asked again and she was very annoyed and short with me. I threw the goods onto the scanning section, walked out, and went to Homebase (it was cheaper as well, so thank you B&Q)!

Good for you Charlie, I would have done the same as you. What a rude shop assistant - whatever happened to 'Customer Care' whatever they call it? I don't think thought is given to elderly or disabled people when introducing these new methods. Morrisons and Tesco have introduced these do-it-yourself check-out systems where I live and have re-introduced self-scanning of items too. Perhaps they will get a robot in to stack shelves next!
Anthea.

Something else that annoys me is,standing in a queue for 10 or 15 minutes at a checkout, then they open the next till and people behind me jump in and get served first.Grrrr. I'm afraid the wife does'nt like me going with her as I get so impatient.

Terry

I agree with all of you and well done Charlie. Wilkinson Aldridge road are the opposite plenty of staff on the tills but sometimes are oblivious of you standing there. They click away on their computers talk to one another and totally ignore you. If they were to say won't be too long it wouldn't be so bad but they actually turn their backs to you. Maybe that is one place where the self pay would be better. By the way I am a patient shopper but amost lost my cool on our third visit. Jean.

I see self service tills as being a convenience particularly when I just have a few items. I was in Ikea recently and the queues for the manned tills were horrendous, I was out in 5 minutes and their self service facility was a delight to use with an assistant standing near to help if necesary. I only wish Morrisons would wake up to the idea. In every store using this system you have the choice, if you dont like or are unable to use self service you head towards a manned till. I am old enough to remember when we were served petrol but self service is now universal. Its called progress Im afraid.

We have them in our Morrisons, in for just over a month. I like them for what they are quick for a few items

..Terry Try a bit of "self control " ,,,it must be a man thing as I have the same problem with that as well my wife keeps telling me off

Well done that man! Bravo!!!! Now write a letter to the Managing Director and tell him too! I'm sick to death with poor service and ignorant staff.

Tom,I could sit on a river bank all day fishing and not catch anything, and it would'nt bother me. Put me in a shop though and I can't wait to get out.

Terry

We have the self-service checkouts in Morrisons here in Brighton, never use them.
The other thing that gets me riled is Aldi and Lidls, no baskets, you have to put all the stuff in your own bag and then empty it out again at the checkout and then re-load it !, unless you want to walk around with a
trolley the size of a small car.

Don't get me wrong,it's not the shops I have a problem with, it's queues.I cannot get my head round the fact that you have to queue to give money away, surely that can't be right.
Another thing that gets me,is these forums that don't display smilies.Where are they? I'm sure they used to be on the right hand side of the message box,or am I losing it and not realising-:)

The smilies arn't in the history section of the forum

At Sainsbury's the other day I joined a queue for a manned till with 3 people in front of me. Despite this an ex- colleague who joined the queue for the self scan [with just two items] actually beat me through by less than a minute as the first scanner had to be taken out of service then the next played up.

In B7Q recently a customer threatened to leave his half full trolley if they refused ot open a check out.

Customer power is what is needed.

Louisa,

I entirely agree with every point you make. All this new,"white hot" technology seems to be designed to cut down employers' payrolls - to the extent that, as you say, we will soon be a nation run by machines.

And when this eventually happens, what I would like to know is: since us humans would no longer have jobs or money because the country's goods are being produced by robots, who's going to buy the goods being produced?

The robots...?

Cheers,

pedlarman

You don't see the prices coming down either do you? Since they don't have to pay many staff, you would think...................but no.

prices wont come down no matter what as banks petrol companys etc costs escalate .. artificially then when costs do come down bigger profits for conglomorates but we still pay inflated prices

We should all phone the head offices of B & Q and other stores that have these self scanners and threaten to take our money elsewhere. only in great numbers can we hope to get some response. I have also have had an annoying experience with these scanners at B&Q.

Malta.

The British habit of 'queuing' is the envy of the world; it the height of civilisation, far superioir to any philosophy, ideology or work of art...the day it dies, then so die we! (discuss in less than 500 words lol)

Hi All,

I used the machine at my local Tesco today as I had only bought a paper and some chocolate. At least the machine said, "Thankyou for shopping at Tesco".

That is more than tjhe real live staff do.

Old Boy

When I used one at Tesco, I discovered that if you stand there looking puzzled, a helpful young girl appears and does it all for you, although you have to enter your own pin number.

Sorry folks, I wanted to play you a great little number about supermarket shopping by Citizen Fish but can't get You Tube to download it. If you want a laugh go on to You tube and search for Citizen Smith Supermarket Song...says it all!

The first time I tried them there were 2 assistants standing ready to help, I for each till! Why not just sit at a normal till?
