The top of the Bull Ring 1957, and the top of the Bull Ring in 1979. Just a tiny 22 years difference.

Here is a nice contrast but by day and night. It's shortly after the opening of the National Exhibition Centre. (I know it is in Solihull really but as it's always credited to Birmingham so I include it here).

Here is the famous Hebe before she was kidnapped and the Pagoda that towers over her former resting place.

Great shots Mike. I like the one of Hebe especially. I remember reading that she was stolen a few years ago and then recovered in a marijuana grow op bust. I then read that she was put in storage at the BMAG with plans to put her in a garden at Children's Hospital(the old General Hospital). Has this happened do you know Mike? Read a bit of trivia about the model who posed for the Brum statue and she came forward when Hebe disappeared to say she hoped she would be found soon.

I was interested in the statue since I visited the island of Samos in Greece a few years ago and there was a temple built for Hebe's mother Hera, there in
800BC. The museum there had quite a bit of info on this family also including Zeus.

One for the Kiddies on a dull damp day, and a view along the High St on the evening of what could have been the same day judging by the weather.

There you are then jennyann, Hebe is now somewhere down the end of Corporation Street not far from the Childrens Hospital opposite the old Central Fire Station. Hope she is anchored down better than last time!
Mike

Thanks Mike. I hope she is well anchored too. Looks like anything that is not firmly cemented into the ground can disappear very quickly. The size and weight seems to be of no consequence.

Froth: That Icelandic site might be on here. It was one of the first Brum sites I found was back in l994 when I first went online. Good postcards on it
too. There was nothing much about Brum online back then let alone lovely postcards like those.

Cheers jennyann, I half guessed someone would have found them.

I lived in Erdington for a short time, but it was along time ago. Where was The Council House shown on this postcard?

Looks like a photo of Rookery House. Erdington Council used Rookery House for it's meetings from 1905 onwards.
Now the place is facing being boarded up. The gardens were always
great in the last few years.

Back to the City Centre and 1950's Corporation Street again. The first view postmarked 1951 shows the tramlines and overhead wire but no sign of a tram so they may have been taken off and the equipment waiting to be removed when this photo was taken. The second view from New Street corner is postmarked Yardley 1956 and went to Birmingham on Sea (W-S-M). In this one Scaffolding Great Britain has supplied the scaffolding used to build the new C&A store up on the right there. The folks down on the left are enjoying a good cant together unaware of the photographer by the look of it. Wonder who they were and what they were talking about.

I have been a bit remiss on this thread of late. So here are three good views to make up for that.

The Public Offices that used to stand in Moor St.

A Rather imposing view of The Town Hall c mid fifties.

An unusual view down Broad Street.

High St. Digbeth. 1885. The first picture is of The Old Leather Bottle. Built in 1625. It is thought that it was originally two private homes. The ground floor is about 3-4 feet below ground level and in the winter was frequently flooded by the River Rea. The Old Leather Bottle was closed in 1892 and was hidden by hoardings for a number of years.

We are in New Street now and it's hard to believe this view is about 30 odd years old.

The building with the statue in front is/was the The Birmingham and Midland Institute in Paradise Street 1890. The second picture is the same site in 1971.
