Loved the web site you posted the link to John, all my Mothers side of the family are from Aston and Harbourne. I have a few family members working as Cycle fitters and makers, and Pearl button makers in Brearley St, so the info about local trades was really interesting..Thankyou.
There is mention of a Screw Warmer on another genealogy site. The worm drive is a particular type of thread more used for gears - apart from some hose clips.
Thanks for your help guys, I have looked at the census returns again and it does say Wormer.
Bernie, I have also researched Pagett's. Mine are in the Aston, Ladywood area and go back to Alvechurch and Clent, Are we linked??
jubilee clips have worm screws assembled on an hand press I worked at Hunt & Turners in Alma street assembling them it was mainly women who worked there
As you say Len, a very smooth alternative to the spur gear. I wonder if
you have ever seen the 'split-gear' version of this, in which a second
loose gear wheel is fitted alongside the first, both are slotted, and a
spring fitted between the two. This arrangement takes out any remaining play between the gear and the worm. A popular method of tuning communications equipment in years gone by.
