My belt has stamps for all the ones I went to .
I'm tying to find out about where the rallies were held and any other info from 1964 to 1968

I was not in a Birmingham Troup but joined 1st Olton Cubs sometime in the early 1950's. A that time the Scout Hut was located in the grounds of Chapel Fields School. Not long after I joined the Cubs my mother was 'coerced' into becoming "Akela" and my Brother joined the Cubs. Dad was also roped in as a "Driver".
Over time, the Scout Hut was re-located to the local park. I moved up from Cubs to Scouts but lapsed for a while, before helping to form a new Scout Troup at Tudor Grange Grammar School in Solihull.
My Mother was invited to take up a position in a Birmingham group (Yardley area?) - I can't recall which one but she soon moved up into a more administrative role. The family remained involved in scouting for a long time but eventually, as often happens, I found other interests and ultimately migrated to Australia.

Hello All,

Before the war many youngsters belonged to some organisation or another. Boy Scouts, Boys Brigade Girl Guides etc. Now, altough these organisations still exist it is rare to see a youngster in such uniform.

I was in the cubs and then the scouts. My cub master ws Frank Wilson and scout leader was a Mr Scott but he went into the army and was sadly killed in action at Sicily. Our troop was 132nd Birmingham and we first met in Jenkins Street School, Small Heath and then At Aidans Church Hall in Herbert Road. I lost touch after we were bombed out and moved to South Yardley. I have fond memories of camps and the annual rallies in Handsworth Park

I later joined the Air Training Corps but that is a different story

I my be wrong but it seems a bit infra dig (whatever that means) for todays youth to belong to a disciplined organisation. I know that some do but not as many as before the war.

Were you a cub, brownie, scout, girl guide, life boy or in the Boys Brigade ? If not why not?

I had much the same thoughts as some of your comments and was thinking that cubs/scouts had died a death, but after walking with someone the other day who is a scout leader he was telling me that every local scout/cub group have huge waiting lists (he quoted me 8 years at one point for cubs) apparently people are signing up when their children are born. The only way to get in sooner is by signing up to become a leader(which I think allows your children in), I was gobsmacked as, like you I thought the whole thing had gone to pot(no clue about brownies or guides though).

So, hopefully there's still a thriving community out there.

Hello Ian,

I remember your Dad from my time in the 88th at Maypole Methodist Church. A passionate man for his music. I learned bugle. We used to parade from the church along sladepool and around the local roads. Also in town from under the central library to the Central Methodist Hall.
