School Road Nursing Home, Moseley

robind

proper brummie kid
My father was born at the 'School Road Nursing Home' Moseley in 1921. I am wondering if the building still exists - the stand out one to me architecturally from at least around the 1920s is 119 - currently the St George's Medical Centre/Surgery. Larger scale OS maps from around that year seem to show the building having the same/similar plan to today.
Does anyone have any idea if my assumption is correct? Can anyone tell me anything more definitive about the Nursing Home?

Yes - on the corner with Cotton Lane.
Must have been new in 1921 as I don't think it is on the 1913 map but is on the 1937 one.

As Mike mentioned, the 1921 census shows Mrs Dora Morris as Matron & she is listed as widow of 43, with 2 young daughters also listed. Also listed is 1 nurse & a nurse probationer, & 2 domestics. Presumably these were all residential? Dora Morris is shown as employer so looks to be private home. There are 8 patients at the time of the census ranging from a mum & her 10 day old, to an 80 year old, so looks to have been a generic nursing home rather than maternity home. Good luck with your search

Thank you everyone. I had a thought last night and am trying to locate his birth certificate now to see if it has anything more than School Road Nursing Home. On past experience of BMD certificates, they do tend to have addresses rather than names of buildings. Will let you know what I can find out - but 79 sounds like a better bet than 119

if there are no more nursing homes mentioned in kellys for 1921 then i would say its a good bet that the one at no 79 is the one where your dad was born..

jan i didnt know that anc have the 21...i do have the 21 from find my past which contains 2 pages of people including patients being there..i was hoping to see the name dickson but its not there so she was probably there either before or after the 21 was taken

With a serious reason to search, I have finally located my dad's birth certificate - which I should have done before my recent visit to Birmingham. It confirms all your suggestions that No. 79 was indeed the location of his birth! Many thanks for the further information from the census and Kellys Directory

Lyn absolutely - and many thanks. I shall search the Directories in due course. I did wonder at the title of 'nursing home' and as Mike said, it was probably a generic/private nursing home which offered maternity care.
