School Dinners P/F Green tickets

All through school had to queue in a special line for free dinner tickets but did not suffer any bullying or micky taking as far as I can remember because of it. My mother was an awful cook. She could ruin a slice of bread and marge (never butter in our house). It was good when my sisters prepared something in Domestic Science , they actually cooked stuff not talk about it, because that day we could eat something at home.
School dinners were pretty good at the schools I attended. The smell of boiled cabbage was always present when the staff were cooking even on days when cabbage was, gratefully, absent.I found out pretty quickly it was best to sit next to a picky eater, that way you could normally wangle a little extra food. I always enjoy eating with company, eating alone is one of the most miserable experiences I can think of.Perhaps school dinners did after all leave me with a legacy.

School dinners in my day were fabulous, the best meals we had all week, used to pray for seconds, even thirds, and yes,i remember the "free" line every Monday morning in the first lesson.
Also going round other schools in the holidays for our dinners, either in Aston or Nechells.Me the eldest, and two/three or even more of my younger siblings.
I remember when i left school, and got my first job,the annual leave i got was spent taking my my brothers and sisters to a school in Nechells(Rupert Street rings a bell here),and getting free dinners myself,I think the lovely ladies there felt sorry for me.

i had free dinners at farm st shcool...lovely they were and i also used to hang around for seconds....

l remember having school dinners at Burlington St Sch in the late 40's...my mother went to work full time so it was easier on her not having to rush home for dinner,....it was hard at first because l was a very finicky eater at home did'nt like this or that etc, well l soon found out at school that you had to eat everything that was put on your plate, like cabbage carrots fish, all the things l hated ....well when l found out l could'nt have any pudding untill l cleared my plate , after awhile found out the veggies wer'nt as bad as l thought they were...l even got to liking stew that was served up, never did like the custard it was so watery, Sylvia do you remember the name of the secretary....l really did'nt like her and she was always prowling around making sure we ate everything.......Brenda

Re: School Dinners

I also had school dinners because my mother worked full time.

I really hated frogs spawn (sago) and semolina.

My son hated - Chocolate Concrete-I never had that!!!https://

I remeber the Free dinner tickets, didn't bother me at the time, my mother was a widow and worked full time.
I remember if I was off school ill, my grandmother used to walk to the school and collect my free dinner!!!

I loved Semolina and still do, and I also loved the Chocolate concrete.

It wasn't until I joined the forces that I realised just how good school dinners were (Or maybe just how bad the forces grub was)
