Sarah Ackrill

Sarah Ackrill nee Keogh was my grandmother from a second marriage (Downing). obviously been researching the lady and found she made numerous court appearances for amongst other things being drunk and riotus. She had some for assault and betting which was illegal off course in those days. Despite her being a bit on the naughty side which was undoubtably made easier because they lived next door to a pub, I don't know the name of the pub but it was, I believe 286 Heath Street. The Ackrills address was 284 Heath Street, Winson Green and a couple of the other tenants were the complainants in the cases. A couple William and Louisa King were just two of them. Despite all these appearances no photos of Sarah are anywhere to be seen. She should have been a famous member of the rogues gallery. Sadly she died early in my life, I was about four so don't have any recollection of her. Any help in finding a photo of Sarah would be appreciated and less important the name of the pub

As a 15 year old boy I had a part time job at the QUEENS ARMS PUB in Heath Street, Wilson Green. I attended Barford Road Secondary Boys School. In the lunchtime break I had to race home, to the pub, to prepare the 'smoke room' for lunchtime dinners for the workers of the nearby GUEST KEEN AND NETTLEFOLD screw factory. Also preparing the vegetables, with the 'misses' Mrs Hawkins. After school in the evenings I did various jobs around the pub, in the cellars etc. I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who remembers this pub. It had a very chequered history just before being made to close.

Thank you so much for the information, Sarah was born Sarah Keogh in Wolverhampton about 1886. She was in service at a milliners in Spring Hill in the 1901 census. I believe she was bought out of service by the Ackrills and subsequently married Benjamin Ackrill. She later married David Downing my grandfather, and she died in 1951 at 11/387 Heath Street. This is the address is where Sarah died. As an aside this address had a back wall which was Nettlefolds.

Cracking photo wouldn't want to drink there but the idea that my grandmother was a drinker there is fascinating. Judging by all her court appearances she was very active fighting in or outside that pub.
