i have in the 1861 census a family member . i have copied down the return so it can be seen.
51 barn street birmingham
john sanders 43
ellen sanders 36
jane 18
john 13
ellen 2
plus 18 lodgers.
although it was not down as a lodging house.
apparantly some of the people were families.
any idea why so many would be at the same property?
thank you for any help

sorry dont know the answer to your question although maybe they were all courts as there is a single dash between the families and the lodgers, but the address seems to be 6 john st. not 51 barn st. as you said :)

hope someone else can answer your question

Shera is correct. It is 6 John St. It is the John St that later became part of Newton St (red in the 1890 map) and is shown in the 1839 map. They didn’t seem to stay long, as the 1858 directory lists William Ellet as occupier of no 6, and the 1862 directory lists nos 6-7 as Harry William Shaw. I'm pretty sure no 6 was the building in blue , which seems large enough for a lodging house. Sorry I can’t be more helpful

As they appear to be mainly irish hawkers/cutlers i suspect it was a tinkers hostel.
