Sames - J Sames & Sons, William Sames Ltd, The Sames Organ Company Ltd

The factory, at the junction of Woodfield and Ombersley Roads was known as 'The Mozart Works'. The business started in 1855 in central Birmingham, but by 1889 it expanded into the building shown below, being on cheaper building land in Woodfield Road

This substantial, three-storey factory suffered sparks from the nearby railway resulting in fires in 1913 and 1923, the latter destroying both the roof and the business. But it has survived and the building still exists today.

The title of the Thread, J & W Sames (1855 - 1949) Pianoforte Makers, is misleading.

The Company was founded in 1855 by a Jacob Sames, and was known as J Sames. In 1865/6 at 5/6 Suffolk St.
From around 1879 it became J Sames and Sons at 5/6 Suffolk Street.
In 1881 J Sames and Sons moved to 31/32 Exeter Street.
Later it became William Sames Ltd until 1921, and then The Sames Organ Co Ltd.
