"Then there was the famed Saltley Dock of the canal carriers Fellows, Morton and Clayton. The company had come into being in 1889, and took over William Clayton's dock down the Garrison Locks at Saltley. He is remembered in (the name of) Clayton Street.
Saltley Docks became the principal boatbuilding dock for the company. Before 1896, all the boats were wooden, but production then switched to steamers made of a composite of iron sides and elm bottoms."
