'Ruins' marked on maps

You often see buildings on maps marked with 'ruins', at least those ones I've seen on maps into the mid-20th century. But I'm not always clear what it actually means. Are these simply uninhabitable buildings ? And/or are they earmarked for demolition ?

Richard Oliver's Ordnance survey maps states " are shown by their outer walls only.A ruin is defined as a building which has been completely or partly de-roofed and is in a condition of decay." The word should not be applied to unimportant buildings". I believe that most of the "ruins" shown in the c1950s Birmingham maps are bombed buildings which are still partly standing

thanks mike i always thought the c1950s maps showing ruins meant bomb damaged ones so what you say confirms this...
