ROYAL NAVY RECORDS: Is it worth......

skylark

Proud to be a Brummie !!
hello folks, I wonder if anyone on the site has applied for Royal Navy Records from TNA? I have found a likely match for Edward Ward b 1880 in Birmingham. According to the 1901 census he is said to be an ableseaman in the Royal Navy, although he is visiting relatives in B'ham. Now can anyone tell me exactly what info I am going to find on the one document TNA say they have on him? The cost is £3.50 which is not much to pay, but I already have his DOB etc so I am keen to find out what extra info they may have on this record ??????????

Margaret,
The navy records office is excellent, within a couple of weeks of my first contact with them,I had my father-in-laws full navy service history 1927-1949,and it was free.
From the information they sent with a list of every ship and shore base he served in,I was able to find out where he was and when for his entire service.:)

That sounds interesting Ray, my chappie probably enlisted c1895 so I wonder if they would have his records as it was so early? You did well to get so much info on you f/i/l..well done.

I did pay to download the document today & it makes very interesting reading. It gives the ships that Edward served on & the dates he was on them, his character was said to be VG, sadly he was invalided out of the Navy when he was 21 in 1900...so now I have the pleasure of tracing the ships he served on.

Margaret.
