Yes, 132/4, High St Erdington, in Erdington. formerly next to the church schools. According to Marian Baxter and Peter Drake's book (Tempus, 1995), it dated back at least to 1760, when it was called the 'Bull's Head'. It was closed and demlished in 1965 and a modern replacement opened in 1967.

I think that there may have been more than one Roebuck in Erdington. I've found a lovely old postcard picture of the Roebuck, but it is not the same one that is already posted here by O C .

That is definately the same roebuck Ian, those are the railings that fronted the National school on the right.
I would love to know the date that picture was taken, as I knew the pub well in my younger days
and I can't remember it looking like that.

I'm dubious about the school railings - there was a beer garden to the right of the Roebuck in the High Street up until 1965.

No, my memory's letting me down. The garden was at the rear of the pub, but there was a gate to it on the right hand side, which I can now see in the picture.

I have two photos. One of the National School and one of the Roebuck in Erdington High Street. Due to an agreement with the Erdington Library regarding copyright I am unable to post them directly on to the Forum. If you would like to see them please send me your e-mail in a private message and I will gladly forward them to you.

Glad to hear you found a photo Lyn.
The Hairy Lemon - not a very appealing name is it - wouldn't fancy a drink in there. Can you imagine: Do you want ice and lemon in that? Err.... no thanks!

i know pol...lol i have to stand opposite the one in town to catch the 66 to visit our dad and everytime i have a little giggle....

A bit off thread, but the Hairy Lemon is a concept pub from Ireland, a pub in Dublin named after one of its patrons, a large bearded man, who unfortunately developed jaundice and turned yellow before his demise - hence the name! They say they keep the original features and add modern furniture to old pubs.
As I've never been in one, can't comment as to whether this is true.

Wendy there is one in Sutton too,on South Parade, the Bitter End. Also one in Erdington as Frothy said and in Woodgate Valley - get in everywhere these lemons lol.

AAAAAh this is what Mum and I were looking at today....but...also....we were looking at a photo "From church in Erdington".....but we couldnt work out which direction it was taken. It had got a row of cottages OPPOSITE the Roebuck, which was an Ansells pub. at the time. This photo makes it Kelseys I believe.
Supposed to be taken in 1900.

We were really confused because we couldnt remember where on the High St it was.Was it going towards the library/Sutton....but there was no trace of the National School.I havent got a copy of the photo, but Mum got it from Birmingham library years ago.

Any ideas?

it was opposite side to Library and near the church, I lived in Slade Rd from 1962 and remember it well when shopping in the High st and market or picking my Wife up who worked in Little woods nearly opposite Eric

The Roebuck was opposite Barnabas Road, over the road for Littlewoods. the National schools was, I recall almost next door to the right, opposite Woolworths.

I am posting a photo of the Roebuck and National School in Erdington High Street. I have had this photo in my possession for
a long time. It came from the Erdington Library a few years back and has been sent to a few people so it is out there
in general. It must have been taken in the 1950's.View attachment National School and Roebuck.bmp
I have one other black and white photo of the missing part of the school which I will find and post.

That's how I remember the National school and Roebuck. I would imagine, looking at the car and the street furniture that this was taken in the 60's, not too long before they were demolished to make way for the new shopping square.

Thanks for posting this one Jennyran

In the area of High St, Barnabas Rd this morning,

more pics to follow, Littlewoods is New Look, Woolworths is B&M

Thanks for the pics Dave. Doesn't seem to change much in recent years. Here is the photo of the National School as promised. I used to
go there some Sundays for classes when the Church House was being used for something other than Sunday School. This would have
been in the early 1950's. It was totally unchanged inside from when it was built.View attachment 21.bmp

Some sort of advertising or collector's card of the Roebuck. Not dated but could be about 1960s. Viv.
