This looks like his granddad's birth:
Births Dec qut 1891
SAWKINS Herbert Aston 6d149

Getting this cert (if you haven't already got it) will give you lots of helpful info' about the family and this in turn will help with your research.

i agree i think this is my grandad although i think he may have been born in 1890 but i can't find him on the 1911 census! anyluck with his father of the same name?

He could have been born in 1890, but not registered until later for some reason.... This can be the case with old records.
There was also a Herbert Thomas Sawkings born in Mar1880 in Alton.
Too late to be your G Granddad, but could be a hint to the possiblity that that was where the family came from as there were also two others Herberts born in the area :
Births Dec 1871 Sawkins Herbert Alton 2c142
Births Sep 1877 SAWKINS Herbert Alton 2c153
Births Mar 1880 SAWKINS Herbert Thomas Alton 2c161

Hi Carolannesmith,
Can't help with research, but just wondered if your Mom was Carol Sawkins and you have Aunties called Hilary and Lynne? I was at Hodge Hill Grammar School, same year as Lynne. Often wondered what became of everyone.
