Remembrance Day 2024

I have just come across the following, when looking at some photographs of GEC at Witton. I thought it appropriate to remember brave "Titch" here, who I'm pleased to report had a headstone erected over his unmarked grave in 2000, has a memorial plaque at Junction Six Industrial Park, Wyrley Road, Witton and a commemorative paving stone on the Walk of Heroes, Hall of Memory, Centenary Square.

Arthur received his medal from George V at Buckingham Palace in 1916. He also received the Medaille Medal from the French. After the war he returned home to Birmingham to work at GEC in Witton. He was chosen as one of those to form the Honour Guard at the burial of The Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey in November 1920. Arthur died at City Hospital, West Heath aged 62 in 1944. A ceremony took place on 13th November 2000 and the headstone, which was funded by Birmingham City Council was unveiled. Representatives of his family attended as did a section of the Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers who played the 'Last Post'. His VC is held at The Royal Warwickshire Regimental Museum.

The BCLM held a service today. There were more people than appears in the photographs, about 100. I was at a position to the side and then two horses came in front of me, one of which had to leave as it did not like standing still. So I apologise that the photos are not very good. But it is good that they held the ceremony there.
