Redding Family Draper of Birmingham

Christina

master brummie
I;ve found out that one of my ancestors, Rebecca Redding (misspelt on Cenus from 1841 to 1871 as Reading) was a Draper/Haberdasher. Her premises were listed as being at 10 Edmund Street. Does anyone know where I can look for more information on this please? Rebecca was born in 1788 and died in 1872. She looked as if she was still working at the age of 82! Many thanks.

:)

Do you have this record?
Name: Rebecca Reading
Event Type: Birth
Birth Date: 03 Jul 1788
Birthplace: Birmingham, Warwickshire
Father's Name: Samuel Reading
Mother's Name: Mary Reading
Record Set: RG4_2972
Collection: England and Wales, Non-Conformist Record Indexes (RG4-8)

Mrs Rebecca Redding (always Reading 1867 and before) is listed at 10 Edmund st from 1829 to 1872, In and before 1845 she seems to have been a linen draper, but after she was a haberdasher and draper . Before 1841 the number of the street is not given, but it is reasonable to assume it is no 10 also
After her death there is a Mrs Sarah Redding , dressmaker, that appears at various addresses around the Balsall heath area. Could this be a daughter or relative that worked for her and after Rebeccas death set up as a dressmaker?

Hi Mike

They have her down as Mrs? She didn't marry, but perhaps she called herself Mrs as it was easier to have your own business at that time, and of course Sarah could have been illigitimate, need to have a look at this. Balsall Heath would be right, and Highgate which as you know is borderline, as this is where my nan/grandad lived (St Martins) and I was born. Thanks so much for your help. Really appreciated.

Regards

Chris
