re:looking for lily violet nabbs

master brummie
Hi everyone, I hope you all had a good Christmas. I'm looking for some help in tracking down the marriage or death of Lily Violet Nabbs born February 1906 - I know that for certain. In the census 1911 she's five and living in Watery Lane, Small Heath but I cannot find her any where after that - I've searched Ancestry. So help please - what to do next. I've been searching for Lily for some years and the 1911 census provided one bit of the family mystery.

Re: looking for lily violet nabbs

Just a few ideas, Sheri, for finding Lily Violet Nabbs.
1) You could try searching FreeBMD using alternative spellings, including Nabbs, Nabbe, Nab, Knab, Knabb, Nabas, Nabes & Nabbe.
2) You could carry out a detailed search in the IGI under the appropriate area - I looked this morning using an advanced "England" search on the spelling you gave, but without any result.
3) If your missing person emigrated you could ask for someone with a sub to Find My Past to look for a listing.
4) A long shot, I know, but it is possible to search on Midlands Historical Data on the electoral roll using christian names.
5) Try a marriage & death search on FreeBMD as there could be an issue with the Ancestry search.
6) Determine whether there is a specialist surname site for Nabbs or similar - one of my family had an unusual surname & I located a specialist web site. I was kindly given details of generations which went back much further than I could have found otherwise.
Good luck.

Was she always known as Lily or did she perhaps prefer Violet? There is a Violet Nabbs who married a Frederick Wright in the June quarter of 1927 in Wolverhampton (FreeBMD).

Re: looking for lily violet nabbs

Hi Sheri,

I wondered the same as Judy about the Wolverhampton marriage of Violet Nabbs. I've had ones that favour their middle name.
On the 1925 Electoral rolls there is William Nabbs and Lily Nabbs living at 45 Bromley Street, which is close to Watery Lane. They are probable relations.

Re: looking for lily violet nabbs

Hi Bordesley Exile, Judy39 and Ann B. Thank you so much for your replies, they are most helpful. I hadn't thought of her using Violet but she'd have to put Lily on her wedding cert. as it is on Birth.c. I saw that marriage on 1911 census, will have to explore it more. Following the naming pattern I thi nk she was named Lily after a child that died - which I came across by accident. But I'm sure she was n ot the birth child of the couple who bought her up because one of the main reasons I began a family search was because I knew so little about my mother's family (was curious after she died thus couldn't ask the questions). My mother towards the end of her life, suddenly said that she and her younger sister thought that their older sister didn't have the same father. The FRC was not far from me so I looked up, out of curiosity, I was shocked to find that my older aunt was a twin, Lily Violet. I don't know if my cousins know this. On the 1911, yesterday, I found her living with her grandparents as a daughter age 5. I also found her twin living as a boarder with her gt.grandparents and her uncle. I often wondered how my g/mother managed to work and look after twins, so she kept one and the other went to her parents. There were not that many Nabbs on the 1911 - some I recognised but I ran out of credits very quickly so will have to wait to explore tham further. It's a shame they've closed the web site.
Anyway thank you so much for all your help. And I wish you all a very Happy New Year.

Re: looking for lily violet nabbs

Good luck in your search, Sheri. It's these little mysteries that make family history so interesting isn't it? Quite a puzzle you have there. Do you have Lily Violet's birth certificate, if so what is her father's name? Is it the same as your mother's father? Might be worth sending for it if you don't already have it. Maybe you will solve the mystery in 2009!

I also ran out of credits very quickly on the 1911 census. I have so many more people I would like to check on, but will have to wait a bit now. I have found lots on the trial index, but that finishes tonight.

Happy New Year :)

Re: looking for lily violet nabbs

Hi Judy, Thank you for your reply. You are right it is these little mysteries that make it so fasinating. No I didn't send for the birth certificate but I have seen the entry at the family records centre which is where I discovered her existence. I know my gr/m didn't marry until 1911 - my grandfather - so these twin girls were born out of wedlock!! Perhaps one day when I'm feeling flush I'll send for it. My cousin has her mother's certificate so they must know about Lily as twins have the same b/c. I've been looking for her for ab out 6 years. Like you lots to look at when 1911 comes on line properly.

Re: looking for lily violet nabbs

I found Lily Violet's b irth on Ancestry and below her was Violet Nabbs - so I'm pretty certain that no LV's marriage in Wolverhampton but they other Violet. I can 't find a marriage/c, but she may not have married because of the lack of men after WW1 - but I can't find her death/c either.
Thanks for you help
Happy New Year,
Sheri,
