I am trying to confirm the house numbers of the Frederick J. Foxall family and the Charles Davies family who lived in Wenlock Road.  The Foxalls lived there between 1901 and the mid-1940s, and the Davies family from about 1910.  I believe the numbers are 108 and 112 but don't know which was which!  Another problem is that, over time, the address seems to have varied between Aston, Witton and Handsworth.  Any help will be appreciated...Thanks.

Geoff, I knew Jeanette Foxall, but I'm pretty sure she was still there in the 50's. I can't help with a house number, but I can say that the address was Witton. I lived in the next road along The Broadway. The only Davis's I knew lived in Norris Road.
 
I do remember the sweet shop Geoff. We used to spend a lot of time sitting on the wall :)

Ask Jeanette if she remebers Beryl Hudson, Pauline Mehan and Lorna Clarke They all lived in Wenlock Road. I lived in Woodall Road.

Did you go th the Bug and Flea on Witton Road? Toffee Apple Jo's?
 
I was checking out the cenus's and the name Foxall comes up quite regually that includes 1841, 1851, 1871 and 1881 for Aston and Birmingham there seemed to a lot around Digbeth (1841) below a link to free cenus you can download each area on to your hard drive better if you have an unzip program hope this is help to you , I have the 1851, 1871 and 1881, the 71 is a bit awkward to read though

The cinema was the Empress Geoff. :) I pulled out a tooth one Saturday afternoon, and dropped it. I don't think the floor had been cleaned since the place was built, :-\ but I did find my tooth.

Which side of Witton Road were you. Did you go to Canterbury Road infants/junior school?
 
My grandmother Martha Morgan lived with her daughter Dora Sambrokk [nee Daley] at 103 Wenlock Road next tp the two little shops .
Childhood memories of going into the shops for groceries in the one next door, and to but exciting reels of cotton and cut out dolls from the other one, and then back through the assage to the back door.
 
Interested to read about Wenlock Road. My parents (Preece) bought the shop at 104 in 1962 from the Smiths. In 1966 they bought the shop at 106 when Mrs Kench died. The shops were knocked into one and traded as a general stores until 1984. We left the road in 1995.
We remember many of the families mentioned although the Sambrokes left shortly after we moved in. Mr Foxall and the Mehans were our customers. Other neighbours were Hammond, Clutterbuck, Welburn, Wynde, Chatham, McBride, Teasdale, Williams, Archer, and Marsh.

Hello LAR. The Clutterbucks were in Wenlock Road in the 40's, Diane was the daughter of the family.

Are you related to Doreen Preece who lived in The Broadway?
 
Yes we remember Diane and her brother Ronnie.

Do not know of a Doreen Preece, and have not come across one in my family history searches, but you never know.

I lived at 61 The Broadway and Mrs Kench's shop was where we went for silly things like batteries, bulbs, reels of thread and so forth. She was a dear old thing and always wanted to talk. Next door was something of a general stores, but I can't remember the name of the proprietor. I remember the Welburn, Teasdale and Flint families. I was actually married in All Souls Church just over the road. Happy Days?....well, not really.

I have just noticed you said you knew the Welburns, I don't suppose you know the names of their children, I think their was a Paul and Nina from what my cousin can remember.

l had my wedding pictures taken by Albert Cotterall nov 3 1956 Still got my albumn after all these nearly 52 years, and it still playes the wedding march...of course the pictures are in black and white, did'nt have the luxery of coloured film then,l also had other pictures taken, but where they are now l'll never know....Brenda
 
I too had my wedding photos taken by Albert Cottrell, 29th June 1957. My sister wedding photos were also taken by him 23rd July 1949. I seem to remember his wife assisted getting everyone in position and making sure the bride's dress was just right. Also am I right in thinking they had a disabled son?
 
I had my wedding photos taken by Mrs Cottrell, just before you Sylvia, March 2nd 1957. I'm just looking at the inside cover of the album, luckily it lives in the cupboard under my computer, and it says A.W. Cotterell 26 Wenlock Road Birmingham. I lived two roads away in Woodall Road.

They did have a disabled son, he was always with his mom whenever I went to the house.

Hi Sandra,

Nina I remember, and her elder (?) brother whose face I can see but can't put a name to. It may well have been Paul. He and my brother were sworn enemies, as I recall...

My wife and I were also customers of the Cottrells in July 1971 outside All Souls Church - we were married by my brother who was a minister at the time. Still have the photo-album, in vivid monochrome, and we all look like we've been dead for a few weeks!

Anyone know what All Souls Church is these days?

Interesting to know that the Cotterells were still in busines in the 70's.

Graham, All souls was redundant in 1981, and sold to Church of God (Universal) So hopefully still a church but not Anglican.

The last time I can recall being there was when a young friend of my sister Jennifer was killed, on his motorbike I think, and his funeral was held there.

I just picked up again on this thread. I remember Christopher Teasdale, who was in my class at Canterbury Cross School. He had a sister, I believe, but I can't remember her name.

Other Wenlock Road families I recall were the Dodges, the Flints and the Welburns.

Regarding All Souls Church, I drove down Wenlock Road a couple of weeks ago and the place seems in a sorry state. I can remember the 'Bazaars' in the 1950's, in the Church Hall, when the Rev Charles Lee was minister; he was a 'proper' parish priest, always able and willing to help and advise anyone. He left All Souls to take up a post at Crowland Abbey, Lincolnshire, and the All Souls choir, in which I sang, were coached out to sing at his induction.

Thanks Big Gee. I was hoping that the first name might have been John, essentially from Walsall in origin.
 
Hi All! Just discovered this thread. I too had Bert Cottrell for my wedding photographs but these were at Christ Church, Summerfield in 1958. I reckon a lot of young couples in the All Souls parish used the services of Bert and his wife over the years. Another aspect of the closeness of the community in those distant days. Nostalgia! Regards to all ex-parishioners, willey.
 
Just come to me as I re-read these posts - the lady who had the general store next door to Mrs Kench's shop was called Mrs Scribbens (possibly Scrivens). I remember her well, but have only just been able to put a name to her. It never seemed to matter what time of day it was, if you really needed something she'd be open!
