John Thomas Rainsford married Temperance Louisa Robinson (known as Louisa) in 1897.
Does anyone know if John Thomas Rainsford born c1854 Birmingham had been married before to a different Louisa?
The 1881 census shows John and Louisa as married, I cant find the 1891 census as yet, but the 1901 census shows married to a Louisa also.
John had 7 children, inc my John Rainsford, my G/Grandfather. All were born between 1874 and 1894. So this louisa may not be their mother unless they didn't actually marry until 1897 after all the children were born. I don't have any certificates for them as yet.
John Thomas Rainsfords parents were John and Ann Maria Rainsford. John was born c1806-14 in Bilston or Kinver depending which census you look at. Ann Maria c1824-28 in Birmingham. They had 7 children inc John Thomas Rainsford.
I do believe that John Rainsford c 1806-14 in Bilston or Kinver has a father Samuel Rainsford born c1771 in Kinver also. He, in the 1841 census was at the home of Thomas Rainsford b c1793 in Kinver too. Are these related?
Does anyone have these in their tree? Is there any descendants of John and Ann Rainsford, or John Thomas Rainsford that has more info than me?
Many thanks for reading this, any info would be greatfully received.....:tuxout:

Hello Jax, I looked on Free BMD and their records are complete for the years John would have married, and there is just the marriage of John and Louisa in 1897. All records can be wrong, but they do have checks on BMD, so I think that you have to order the certificate of Johns first child, it will show you without doubt who the mother was.

Good Luck:)

Hi jax

Is this what you wanted, marriage --

Temperance Louisa Robinson 3rd qtr 1871 Birmingham 6d 201

This is intriguing

I found that on Ancestry so i have just cross checked it on FreeBMD, according to that she married either Alick Borrow or Thomas King, could this in some way explain the late marriage to John.

I looked for her birth also and the only one i found was --

Temperance Robinson 4th qtr 1853 Aston 6d 254 (No middle name)

I would have to get the cert of her marriage to John, 1897, to see if there is any clue about her being married before.

Temperance Louisa Robinson married Alick Borrow
23rd july 1871,St.Peter ,Dale end,Birmingham.

If she then married John at a later date was it because she had to wait for Mr. Borrow to die,it was difficult and costly for women to get a divorce.
A divorce however would explain why she used her birth surname to marry John.
I don't know suppose they did checks of birth certificates and previous marriage certs like they do today so perhaps you could call yourself whatever you liked.
If you obtain both marriage certificates they will both have fathers name and address and could prove very useful.

Reply Jaxk; Rainsford

Hello there Jaxk. Not alot of use for the specific, but my father b1914 had a close friend Albert Rainsford. They stayed in contact and Albert came to my fathers funeral (1997) and visited my mother in the years afterwards. Kind tall man with the stoop of old age. Have a few other details from the 1930's.

Long shot but..

Hi all,
Many thanks for all your replies, it has been very interesting seeing all your thoughts.
I certainly believe that you may well be right Alberta, I did find the previous marriage before. But couldn't find any signs of them on the censuses. So I had put that one on back burner at the time.
And you are all right I must get the certificates to see exactly what is going on with them at that time, when my finances permit me to do so.
I have to say you have all been very kind to bother to check things out for me. Once I have the certificates, I may end up being more confused than ever, so will most definately get back to you all again if I do.
Many thanks,
Jax
