:D Ray please let us know more! I remember as a child of the 50's growing up listening to the Sunday lunchtime programme for B.F.P.O in Cyprus, Germany, Gibraltar and Malaya. Requests with I think it was Judith Chalmers and some Bloke. I remember hearing Ann Shalton singing ' Lay down your arms' and Pet Clark's ' Sailor' (I think) also Vera Lynn songs. They got lots of requests for Military type songs and there were lots just after the war. :)

Hi Pom, As I recall, the programme was called 'Family Favourites', the presenter was Jean Metcalfe and the theme tune was called 'With A Song In My Heart' Da da daaaa, da da daaaa Whenever I hear that tune, I smell Bisto. I think it was followed by the Billy Cotton Show.

Family Favourites

The time in Britain is twelve noon and in Germany it's one o'clock, but home and away it's time for Two-way Family Favourites. I believe Jean Metcalfe and Cliff Mitchelmore [in Germany] married in the 50's. I, of course, don't remember this, my mother told me

Sixties

The programme was still running in the sixties? I listened to it, and I am but a youth in bud? :P

:D Thanks for all the Info' you guys & girls, being out of the country for so long tends to dull the brain on some things. But there always seems to be some one who can put it right :) Thanx.

Rod, I think the programme ran until British forces pulled out of Germany, which probably wasn't until the 70's, although others can no doubt put a date on that. Incidentally, for those of us still living in the mother country. Did you know that the NAAFI in Germany was sold when the forces pulled out? It was bought by a German company called Lidl. As it happens, I'm off right now to their Trowbridge branch to get my Bratwurst! Auf Weidersehn Yo Lot

music

The music is lovely Rod..........I'm not sure if I'm old enough to recall it..........my husband is though

I have just tried the link Rod suggested and it was lovely to hear the signature tune again for Forces Favourites - The tune is called "With a song in my heart". There was also a biopic of the same name made in the 1950's - the life story of Jane Froman - played by Susan Hayward, I have seen it many times at various cinemas when it was first released and on TV.

Family Favourites

Thanks Rod for the link. Absolutely wonderful. So many memories mostly of parents and friends no longer with me that it made me cry. So to cheer myself up I put on radio two and there was Judy Garland singing Somewhere over the Rainbow. Come on Kandor bail me out with a funny story, it's like the Titanic in my living room.

two way family favourites

And dont forget the immortal lines

"what's the weather like where you are Judith "
