purple tomatoes

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
Hi guys
I have just seen the news today that the gm food of tomatoes are on the way to the shops its means are purple tomatoes and they are extra good for you
And they reckon they are like granberrys I personally will not entertain them what chemicals will they behold I say
I am old fashioned and very passionate about my red times and I know I will not attempt to try them and they recken it will help to keep cancer away
What are your thoughts have you tried them yet best wishes astonish

It would seem that it is only the juice that is going to be available, and this only in experimental quantities, so there will be little chance of trying them yet. I do not personally object to genetically modified material as such, merely its use for purposes that are more towards giving a company a profit , rather than giving the consumer any added benefit. As an asside, I do not really like tomatoes unless they are diluted to mmake their taste less obvious

Do we already have genetically modified tomatoes? I seem to recall that those available today are modified to keep longer before softening.. At home the tomatoes last far longer than those I grow in the garden, they only seem to last a few days while the "shop" ones last many more. Maybe somebody could say why this is so.

I think that some of the ones currently on supermarket shelves have been irradiated which kills off surface bacteria(?) which can lead to premature deterioration. Also tomatoes like most other fruit and veg have been heavily hybridised to selectively breed out unwanted characteristics and visa versa.

Wanted characteristics have also gone from many things. Taste for one thing in the cheaper varieties of tomato, usually grown outside the United Kingdom, is often lacking.

Not tomatoes but how many lovely cut flowers no longer have a scent? Personally if a flower should have a scent and it doesn't, I do not buy them.

I much prefer my purple or red onion to the white so maybe a purple tomato will be my preference too?. Will give them a try. Is it something to do with the antioxidants in red or purple veg?.

I understand that, before the use of genetic modification became controversial, there were soem GM tomatoes grown and used, but only, I think, for Sainsbury's (& possibly other manufacturers') tomato puree. When people started getting uptight then they reverted to ordinary tomatoes.

Think I will give them the miss, I try not to eat anything that my grandmother would not recognise as food.
