hi pam. i can remember that ointment well. had a relative who lived next door to dr taggets. you are quite right about the white swan. i have pics of 3 of the four corners of farm st/villa street. there was farm st school (i went there) dr taggets the dispensary and as you rightly said the white swan. here it is with my dad ladders propped up at the window. not a sign of dad mind lol lyn
hi maurice. just checked the kellys and i cant find a pub called the lights. the only pub listed in hospital st is the vulcan and the only one listed in tower st is the st georges tavern. dad has lived there for nearly 80 years and remembers it as the vulcan so i dont know. lyn ps going by the way the street numbers run it would be right. maybe someone can help.
Lynn wasn.t it Dr Target? & the dispensary across the road was Dr Riechenfeld (our Dr) we heard that he had escaped from Austria with his family during the war were he was a specialist! my mom used to pay fourpence a month to cover Dr & dispensary visits. hi maurice and mike. the st georges tavern was on the corner of tower st and hospital st where hospital st starts it was by st georges church. if you work your way down hopital st (it was cut in half by new john st west) the vulcan was right on the corner of hos and new j st west. it was opposite box carton. i will ask dad about this and also ask if he remembers the lights pub as he has far more knowledge of the old boozers than i have lol lyn ps maurice would the lights have been a knickname or was it the proper name of a pub. just a thought.

You could well be right in suggesting "The Lights" may be a nickname.
After seeing your picture I spoke to members of my family,they only remember it as "the Lights".
We feel sure the picture is not "The Vulcan"as we lived very close to it in Hospital Street.

hi maurice. this is good lol. checking my 56 kellys again the vulcan is definately on the corner of hospital st and new john st west but what you are saying is that the pic is not of the vulcan. can you remember what the vulcan looked liked then. i would imagine that the st georges tavern was only a small place. im sure ive seen a pic of it somewhere i must check. phoning dad in a bit to see if he can shed more light. ha ha excuse the pun lyn
hi all. just spoke to dad and he said that when he took a look at the pub pic some time ago he straight away said it was the vulcan. but i am taking it down again in the morn for him to have another look. now with regards to the lights pub. he has heard of it and it was a knickname for another pub. at the moment he cant recall which one but knows a man who will lol so he will get back to us on that one. it may have been knickname of a pub that was by a set of traffic lights. he also well remembers the st georges tavern on the corner of tower/hospital st. said it was a very small place and not much to it. lyn

To the left of the pub in your picture the houses drop back from the kerb giving them front gardens,If it were "the Vulcan"It would show houses flush with the pub i.e., no front gardens.
"the Lights" I remember was on the corner of Hospital Street & Tower Street on the corner diagonally opposite Tower Street Park,I think your picture shows Tower Street to the left of the pub where the houses had fron gardens.

hi maurice. the pub on the corner of hos/tower st was called st georges tavern and like i said it was only a tiny place. the pub in my pic is massive and the only other pub listed in kellys for hospital st is the vulcan so i think we need some help here. i wouldnt mind but i wasnt even old enough to go into pubs when the pic was taken lol can you just confirm that you are saying that my pic is not the vulcan but it is the st georges tavern that was knicknamed the lights. we know for certain that the vulcan was on the corner of hosp and new john st west but if this is not it its been mislabled. lyn
In answer to maurices question, there don't seem to be any pubs listed in thomas st. But considering the photograph, the name vulcan was added later. All the label originally said was unknown hospital st pub, ansells, 13.10.1980. Now I don't have a 1980 Kellys (I know there isn't one) but in 1964 there are only two pubs listed, the dolphin at 306, apparently at corner of Frankfort St, and the guildford arms , for which no number is given. I can't see the date being wrong as its so specific, so it;s probably one of those

hi mike and maurice. if you look at the pic again the date is 1960 not 1980 lol checked 56 kellys again and as i said the st georges tavern is at 18 tower st/corner of hospital that pub was a very small one. the dolphins add is 306 hospital st corner of frankfort st. the guildford arms is 154 farm st corner of hospital. its definately not either of these pubs as i have pics of both here is the dolphin. i will have to find the guildford cant remember where ive saved it lol. my money is on the vulcan which in the kellys the add is 231/233 hospital st indicating that is was a large pub which the one in the pic is. going to see dad this morning so i will ask him again. dont worry lads we will get to the bottom of it(eventually) lol lyn will post the guildford when i find it.

HI Astoness I used this pub a few times with my step father he always called it the Lights ,it was a well known scrumpy house, it was opposite the park in tower street .
