Hi Frothy. Further to my post #13, I may have been a little hasty. Today I have spoken to a relative of the Waite family who told me that during renovation work in the 1940's evidence was uncovered that suggested that the Castle may have been a coaching inn sometime between the 17th/early 19th century. Just goes to show one should never say never. I'm sure someone can throw more light on this one.

In 1849 Mary Warham is listed as Victualler Castle Inn, Castle Bromwich. Cheers.

Yes it is, I've never been in there myself, but my moms neighbours used to go there for a meal and they said what a lovely place it was.

I was in Birmingham on Tuesday for a job interview. Walking back from Broad Street I crossed Chamberlain square and decided I’d stop for a pint. Thinking I’d go into The Mail which used to be in Pinfold Street, that’s where I headed. Gone. Crossed to Bogart’s. Gone. Walked down to The Yard of Ale (aka Teddy’s. Hole in the Wall, Tavern in the Town) I was pleasantly surprised to see it still there and open.

Walking down the steps I was further impressed that I could have been back in the 70’s. It looked just the same. My pleasure soon turned to dismay when during conversation with the barman I heard it was closing early in October to become another Chinese restaurant.

I also visited The Shakespeare, The Crown and unfortunately the Station was another closed pub.
