Hi,

I'm reseraching my stepfather's family tree and have found that several of his male acnestors on his father's side were publican's at a pub which stood at 26 Broad Street, Birmingham. I cannot find a name for this pub or any history of it. Can anyone help? The Census records for 1841, '51, '61 '71 list the same family running the pub. The family name is OWEN and the 1841 Census shows a John and Mary Ann OWEN as the Licensed Victualers.

Any help in finding out information about this pub or a pointer in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Midland Pubs

Dear Lee
I wonder if the pub name would be listed in the Street /Trade Directories. You could put in a request in another part of the forum for a directory lookup just in case.

These are also some good websites for pub information but I dont know if it will have details of the pub you want.

www.innsignsociety.com

There is also a book published by the Federation of Family History societies called Vicuallers Licences by Jeremy Gibson and Judith Hunter and this may give you further info or tell you were records are located.

If they dont have it you could try the Famiy tree Magazine who will have the book. www.family-tree.co.uk

The Birmingham Library local studies section may also be able to help and if you e-mail or phone they are very helpful and may be able to give you a further pointer, but I should try the directories first.

I dont know too much about pub history etc only ancestors were canal boatmen but I hope there is something in there to give you a pointer.
