Private Railways In Birmingham

Good to see it restored. Looks great. Wasn't the maroon the original Cadbury colour before the more modern purple ?

Not a railway in Birmingham but a railway of Birmingham. This photo shows the Birmingham Corporation Waterworks Railway (BCWW on the wagons) during the laying of one of the foundations stones for the Elan Valley dams. The wagons, no doubt cleaned up for the occasion, carrying numerous dignitaries from Birmingham for the ceremony. Hi

Minworth works, or UMTDA.. Upper Tame Drainage Authority. I was the auto electrician from 1968 until 1970 ish and I was responsible for all the vehicles including the narrow gauge locos, the wiring was in a state on most of them so I suggested I rewire them and to my surprise they agreed so for several weeks that was my main occupation. If I remember correctly they had a little two or three cylinder diesel engine in and mounted on the roof was a klaxon horn which was sounded to inform the crossing man of the approaching loco and he would walk out into the road with his flag and stop the traffic, the tubs on the back were full of sludge which was emptied into shallow lagoons to dry out.

Once dry the sludge was collected and moved to the fertiliser works apart from some that was collected by Max Factor the cosmetic company. I wonder what they did with it???? The drying beds were covered with tomato plants, seems the seeds are capable of passing though the human digestive system and sewage treatment unaffected.

Cadbury No 14 was a North British diesel locomotive, the No 14 shown here was delivered new to the Fry / Cadbury Factory from Hudswell Clark and although it spent time in the Cadbury Bournville Car Park it never worked on the Bournville Railway Network.

in 1979 Hudswell Clarke D 1009 of 1956 0-4-0DM was recorded at the Cadbury -Schweppes factory at Somerdale, Avon and was named SOMERDALE

The number 14 was added after preservation
By then the North British Loco at Bourneville had been disposed of and the railway system closed
