Princess Alice Infants School

Lady Penelope

master brummie
Does anyone know anything about Princess Alice Infants School please? I was asked about it last night and until then didn't know it existed. Apparently the school was open to pupils from the surrounding area not just the orphanage children. Brampton Hall was there until recently even after Tesco's was built. This was used as a gym by the little school.

Lady P in the Sutton Coldfield Observer dated Friday April 14th 2017, page 36. a full page given over to the Princess Alice Orphanage

I could not find this article. However it may be amongst all the details about the retail park with the same name.
If you look at the papers web page you will see mention a Beggars Bush (the subject of another thread here). A roundabout is suggested to alleviate what, it appears, is a dangerous junction. Nothing changes then...if you see what I mean.

Yes, it was! I went to it because it was the only infant school around at the time. When the new school was opened at Banners Gate, we went there instead. I had to catch the school bus from Sutton Oak Road to the school, which seemed a very long way at the time.
The school hall was divided into classrooms by means of a folding screen. I remember there were outside loos which leaked, or at least had water on the floor. We had once had a school party, in 1951, and we were quite excited because someone had made a jelly - but sadly it was lumpy. I still have a photo of the event, which shows the room decorated with Union Jacks and we are all sitting with our small bottles of milk. Mrs Clark was headmistress at the time, and Mrs Attwood was the reception class teacher. She terrified children for years and years!

From memory of schools/colleges etc. - all of which was a long, long, while ago - most children/pupils where I went did have respect for their tutors. Sometimes this was from fear or principally the way most were brought up; like everything in life there was always exceptions to the rule -generally amongst those who were of a lower academic status.
My church also has a primary school - a mile or so from the church - but from time to time a service (other than the assembly version) is held there. A previous head teacher (woman) used to sit facing the children with a naturally stern face - few fidgeted or lost attention. A change to new head (man) changed it all. Frequent attention loss and fidgeting. 21st. c maybe?

Hello Paula, thank you for your post. I shall tell my friend about it. I was trying to work out when she would have been there but it would have been after you and as she lived in Elizabeth Road would have stayed at this school. I'd love to see the photo if you can put it on the forum at some time.

Very interesting just read Paulas reply re Princess Alices and I guess I was there about the same time 1949 to 51. I certainly remember the party as have a similar picture. Many of the pupils like me went on to Boldmere Juniors then Ryland Bedford and eventually John Willmott GS when it opened in 1958. By another co incidence I lived at Elizabeth Road (no21) until 1955. Thanks for the memory prompt of relatively happy times. Richard
