Prestidge Ann 1837-41

I've hit a brick wall where I've deleted 60 odd names from by files...
Above lady was born in 1837 Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.
Married John Hunt in 1863 as far as the records go, and is on the census with him from 1871 onwards living in Birmingham (noted born in Oxfordshire)

The marriage is on BMD for 1863.
The marriage on IGI stated that she was younger than him, but the census show the same age (give a year).
On IGI the only info for the marriage seems to relate to another Ann (Ann Elizabeth) born in Northampton....

I tried going back to 1841 to find Ann Prestidge, but cannot find a trace..

Can anyone help to solve this puzzle please??

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

I had a look at both births and marriages, it looks to me that Ann Elizabeth was born in Brackley and because of its' location was classed as Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

I only found 2 births around that time of Prestidge in Chipping Norton, one was a George in 1842 and the other --

Name:Female Prestidge
Year of Registration:1840
Quarter of Registration:Jul-Aug-Sep
District:Chipping Norton
County:Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire
Volume:16 Page:49

Most births for this name seem to be from Oxford to the north and east

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

I had a poke around Chipping Norton and on the 1841 Census found Mary Ann Prestidge age 5 in the Union workhouse Chipping Norton. On the IGI her parents are William and Hannah, there is a William Prestidge, harness maker living in Chipping Norton on the 1851/61/71 census, on the 71 he is married with a son Thomas, his wife is Ann. In 1861 it looks as if he is married but his wife is not at home. I am not sure if any of them are your family, but thought it worth you keeping a note of them

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

Hi Bren and Di,

The 1840 birth of Ann in Brackley is the one that sent me on the wrong track....her parents were William Prestidge and Hannah Cooke, and I found the family on every census from 1841, all same place in Northamptonshire.
What made me think I'd gone wrong was when I rechecked the 1871 census, showing Ann and husband same age...give or take a year.

I went back into births, and found Hannah Prestidge born in 1837, with parents William Prestidge and Hannah Goodwyn  in Chipping Norton.William and Hannah (parents) married Chipping Norton 1835.
I, also, could only find workhouse Mary Ann Prestidge on the '41 census, so as I said, I am really blocked here....

The marriage for 1863 in Leamington, Warks is the right one.

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

Hi again,
I've just been rummaging in the BMD, and have found TWO Chipping Norton deaths
Hannah 1Q 1838
Hannah 2Q 1838
which could explain why father William was already alone on the 1841 census...
I've found his second marriage to Ann (Farmer or Smith) on BMD 3Q 1853 - which ties in with the census of 1861 and 71.

As the marriage of Ann Prestidge and John Hunt specifically states Ann ELIZABETH Prestidge, do you all think that this is enough to send me back to the Northampton falimy (ie: the Bracknel birth?).....
I'm starting to think I may have been too quick to scrub them off my ancestry file:'(.......................

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

I think that before you decide on anything you need more proof, you have to order some certificates. Start with the marriage of John Hunt and Ann Elizabeth Prestidge with the reference that Bren gave you. 1863 March quarter Warwick 6d 486. Otherwise you could research the wrong family.

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

This is my problem Di....I live in Tunisia and we have restricted currency (ie it's not convertible to euros or pounds).
My only option now is to post on some of the town / village boards and hope that some-one can confirm or enlighten me as to if I'm on the wrong track....:(
Thanks for your help either way

Re: Ann Prestidge 1837-41

Wel guys,
Ancestry have just sent me a 'hint' for the 1871 census:
John Hunt and Anne Elizabeth, both live and well living in St Nicholas, Warwick.....
so I went back to BMD - wait for it...
Got another marriage 6 months earlier than the one we looked at - John Hunt with Ann Williams (born Balscote Banbury, Oxfordshire - which is only 4 miles from Brackley...if that isn't co-incidence, what is!)

As my John and Ann were alive and well in B'ham on the '71 census, I am now discarding Anne Elizabeth entirely. :angry2:

So, sorry for having put you to extra work :), but this thread is now closed :crying2: and I'm back to the drawing board!
