PRESSBURGERS TAILERS BRISTOL ST

Pressburgers
Hi...back in the 1980,s there was a jewish tailor that I and a lot of the mod community used to use up on Bristol Street called Pressburgers where I had some most fantastic mohair suits made . After about 1986 I never used them again and they disappeared......For me they were the best tailors in Bham ...they knew the look they knew the cut and the cloth and most importantly knew what the young mod wanted to look like......perfect for me..

Anyway what I want to know is ....
1-when did they shut their doors.
2- did they move from Bristol strreet to somewhere else ?
3-why did they shut
4-are they trading somewhere else under a different name (but they were old guys back then and probably made their name in the 60,s....

Anyone want to share their memories or have any answers to my questions...

cheers KRO..

We seem to have our wires crossed here as you were on about the mods I thought you were refering to the original mods in the 60's that i was a member of. I dont recall any mods in the 80's I thought that was the Durran Durran era.

Most of us Mods in the 60s all used a Jewish tailor by the Silver Blades Ice Rink. Edward Lerman was his name most of us would have one made on average every two months. We would go in most Saturdays after the West End and pay something on the one that was being made. Then we would be asked in for a fitting, he would then call you back usually in a fortnight to pick it up. Then we nearly always asked to look at the Tonic Mohair book and get measured up for another one. I know Duffy used him and I thought Shaun Mahoney and his brother Paul also. We never had the same design all the time. I had an Indigo Blue made with Patch Pockets, a Tabacco Gold one with slant pockets which was two button with two vent. A Pale Blue fitted one with center vent. They all had hand stitched lapels. I even had hand stitching on the patch pocket Indigo Blue one. They were nearly all £44 Guineas.

No from 1979 up unti lthe mid 1980s there was a massive mod revival and bands including people like Paul Weller.

I had my wedding suit made at Pressburgers in 1990, they were still on Bristol Street near the Horsefair then.

There is a young female pharmacist in a local pharmacy and her mother who is late forties likes to wear vintage Mod clothes. She says her mom says she was born 30 years too late.

I thought this Two-Tone stuff that originated in Coventry was mod.
It was but the original Mods of Birmingham used to buy it on the Blue Beat label in 63/65 from the original Diskery shop. Mine I lent out in the late sixties early seventies to a Disk jockey friend never to be seen again. See I have not forgotten it was you Pete Aske.
