Post War Pubs

Historic England is launching a campaign to protect post-war pubs in 2017. This article mentions the Black Horse at Northfield (status raised from II to II*). Keep an eye open for examples, especially those in disrepair. The pubs need to be 30+ years old. Viv.

The wording of the report is confusing. The Black horse is post-war, but post ww1 not ww2. This mention would be separate from main appeal

Hey Mike, being pedantic as always. If it's post WWI then it must also be post WWII.

True Phil, but the newspaper report if read quickly, might be taken to imply that it is post WW2. Some of our younger members, who possibly think you and I were born in the age of Dickens, might not realise this

As always with these sort of preservation societies do a lot of talking with very little action, as we all know upgrading a buildings status whilst preventing demolition does very little towards it's preservation. For instance the last time I passed the Brookhill Tavern it was closed down, fenced off and looked like it was being vandalised daily.

Personally I think that Historic England is just another quango (jobs for the boys) cutting the poorly performing English Heritage into two halves so that neither one looks like it is performing as badly as the whole was. Yes I do have a pessimistic outlook and for the sake of our heritage I really hope that I'm wrong.

This looks like a post-war pub, but I don't know the exact date it was built. It's the Bear on Stratford Road at the junction with Thornhill Road. It looks like it's in good shape and still seems to be running as a pub. Distinctive pub sign too. Viv.

the pub building looks good from the outside but inside it needs abit of a make over
very dark and very sparce inside beleive me
it still very busy thou with the gangers meaning the Irish road gangers and builders
IT as a very cold feel to it not many tables im afraid very sparcce a couple of them around the bar
but very vast flooring inside but as i said its alway full

Was the Crossways pub at Perry Common an inter-war-years pub? The council estates around there sprung up after WW1. Instead of demolishing the building the developers converted it to flats. I thought this was a good idea as it left a local landmark but provided much needed housing.

The Hare & Hounds, Marsh Lane, Erdington has just closed amidst much opposition. Wonder what that will be replaced with?

The Leopard in Jerry's Lane, Erdington is getting a makeover - does anyone know whether it will re-open as a pub or something else please? It looks very smart from what I could see over the hoarding.

I can tell you that planning permission was obtained for six dwellings before it was sold, but it doesn't say if that would be a conversion of the existing building or new build houses on the site.

Thanks Phil, they were definitely restoring the original building so I suppose it will be apartments. What year would the picture have been taken? I don't remember the bit on the front of the outdoor. I do remember the bookies runner, an elderly man (or so he seemed to me) standing in the doorway with his oilcloth bag. Men would come and drop a little paper parcel into this bag but not say anything to him. All very mysterious! Glad it's getting a new lease of life. I don't remember Dad ever going in this pub although it was only 5 minutes away from the pre-fab. His local was the Greyhound.

Well the information with the photo says 31st of January 1962, but to be quite honest it looks earlier than that to me. In fact I think that there is more chance that this second image without the projection at the front dates from the early 60's.
