when we were kids we used to dig up pig nuts and eat them anyone els tried them i would not know where to find them now

Crikey Jake that takes me back,I remember doing it but what on earth were they.
I also remember that we just dug them up and ate them,no rinsing them clean. How come we didn't die of some awful disease?

Yes Jake, Us kids dug up pig nuts, wiped them on the grass and ate them also we dug up horseradish root this was pre WW2 from green land in front of the houses from Clay Lane along the Coventry Rd south towards The Wheatsheaf, the houses are still there but the land has gone due to the reconstruction of the Coventry Rd, i would not know where to find pig nuts now or recognise the green leaves that were from them. Len.

Amazing how this forum makes me remember finding pig nuts and eating them, hadn't thought about them for 50 years plus !

I seem to remember it was something you learned from the cubs etc when you were earning badges survival etc? you found them in a particular type of grass if I remember right?

That takes me back, we used to find pig nuts up in the fields where Ley hill estate is now, in Northfield. Strange to think of the grubby things we ate without coming to harm.

Mike & Lloyd, Thanks for the links, i shall try to find my Richards pen knife (a Lighthouse mark on the blade) we all had one they were cheap at Woolworths i think, and on finding a piece of rough grassland will start looking for the pig nut leaves and dig them up with my trusty blade, i am hoping for a contract to supply Tescos with my nuts (ha!, ha!) and make my fortune!!. Len.
