I think you may have the wrong period, as the newspaper archives give only one mention of him in the period 1890-1900, and that is as a friend of another boxer who had just died. ( shown below). However , for the period 1860-1869 there are 240 hits (though it is possible that some are for others with the same name)

Thank you so much for heading me in the right direction, obviously boxed much earlier than I thought. appears to have been a member of my Phelan family, whose Gt nephew George Phelan was a boxing promoter during the 20/30s in Birmingham.I think you may have the wrong period, as the newspaper archives give only one mention of him in the period 1890-1900, and that is as a friend of another boxer who had just died. How do I find the general Phelan thread please......clicked on everything and nowt comes up......lol
No reply but another lead is suggesting the Boxer in family could be a Jack Dunhill (or John). There IS a John Dunhill so could be him but cant find anything in searches. The person who told me has a picture with name on the back but mislaid it for now.Yes thats the one about all different boxers......will have to find time to read it all again,to see if any Phelan's are mentioned as I have found out that a story about a boxer in the family could refer to a George Phelan...I have messaged someone on Ancestry about him and await a reply.
