Hope I'm not treading on your toes, Georgie, but I've mentioned the petition on a couple of WW2 forums to which I subscribe.

Does anyone else subscribe to anything similar and relevant?

Chris

CHRIS....THANK YOU SO MUCH. THIS IS JUST WHAT I NEED .... BLESS YOU for adding the website for me...:). I'll certainly look at your sites too. Georgie

timber corps

Georgie,
Would I be correct by saying that the badge is forthcoming and also for the WLA? but only awarded to surviving members,
Anyway wish you well

yes....you are correct. I put my Petition on the Downing Street site for the deceased members families of the WLA and WTC as someone else had only put a Petition forward for the Womens Land Army only.... and... you have to be quite precise in what your Petition is for. The Womens Timber Corps were part of the Womens Land Army but were quite often left out and never heard of... It may sound silly to anyone reading this... but I wanted it to be made quite clear that if the families of the WLA were to get the badge so were the families of the Womens Timber Corps...

Georgie.

Re: Womens Timber Corps

My Mum who is 88 now, was delighted to receive her Land Army badge a fortnight ago. She was in the Land Army at Corfe Mullen in Dorset to begin with, then transferred to the Isle of Wight where she was seconded to the Timber Corps. She is very proud of the fact that she served in both, but very disappointed that the letter with the badge wasn't from the Queen. (She dosen't like Gordon Brown or any politicians!)

Re: Womens Timber Corps

O/k Chris, I did search for it using a mixture of the words involved but found nothing.

I had a step-sister who was in the Land Army and I remember her calling into home quite often because she was staioned somewhere near to Atherstone. These memories are vague because I was only five when the war ended. She somehow met a man, a coal miner from Atherstone and married him. My Mother in law (god bless her) was also a member. She came from Ireland as a teenager and did her bit living and working on a farm. This suited her because she came from a farming life in Fermoy, I don't know where she was but she told me they would stop work and count the aircraft leaving the local airbase for a raid. They would also count them back in again and would all worry about any that were missing until they found out who the crew were at the Saturday dance in the lacal hall. As one reads about the work these girls and women did for Britain, it becomes painfully obvious that we could not have won the battle without their massive effort.

Re: Land Army Girls Award

Just to add another bit of history to this thread I've put to-gether a collage of pics showing my mother when she was in the WLA.
I believe she spent some time in LLandudno during the war. She too has missed out on receiving the WLA badge, shame.

The women of Britain filled many roles previously filled by men. Postwomen, Munitions Workers, Air Raid Wardens, Conductorette, NAAfi, WRNS, AFS, ATS, WAA and so on. Picture one and two are one picture but it was too large so I split it. The large blonde head was the original poster and soon became known as 'The Blonde Bonbshell' created by Abram Games to promote the ATS. It was quickly condemmed as being too glamorous and was replaced by the small more orange picture.
