Perry Barr Shopping Precinct 1960-9, Lynton Sq

Hi i do think looking from front far left leading to super market their was two mens tailors one called burtons the other possible greens their also was a travel agent in the center block mom cleaned for them.
 
Gosh, this brings back so many memories. I grew up in Perry Barr and spent many a day walking around Lyndon Square. My Mom, Bridget, worked in Fine Fare for many years and would often take us into work on Saturdays. I’d sometimes spend the day helping Charlie load the escalator from the basement car park loading Bay Area. I got pepper dust in my eye from and old box and Charlie had to rush me down to Boots Chemist on the corner where they cleaned it out. Even though the Square went up in 1964 when I was a baby it seemed like it had been there forever to me and it broke my heart when they tore it down. It was part of my whole existence as a child. Happy days.

I was wondering if anyone has any memories of the shopping center which was there before the one stop, I was only young but remember there was a finefare supermarket and a (which I thought was awesome at the time) large sports shop where I got my first pair of proper trainers :)
I remember the brummies speedway track was demolished for this development aswel but you can still see where the pits used to be around the back. There was a tiny record shop right at the front of the shops aswel which could only hold about three people.
I know my Dad has a complete set of photos from demolition to finish which I keep meaning to dig out

Hi Ade , you must dig out those pics that your Dad took, I have fond memories of this place, I worked at Fine Fare as a saturday boy, my Mum worked at MacFisheries, I bought my first football boots at Olivers and my first Records at the small record shop at the front (David Bowie). Would be great to see some more pics, Cheers Mike

images posted before about sept 2010 were lost when the forum was hacked..maybe if mike jenks is still looking in he could re post it for us
