People trying to do a Brummie accent annoys me! / My sayings!

Frank Parker

I know there is some similarity between a Brum accent and a Wolverhampton accent but I do get really annoyed when people attempt to do a Brummie accent and always sound like they come from Dudley or something! Now I am not knocking the Wolverhampton accent, both my Parents were born in Wolverhampton and my Dad as a strong Wolverhampton accent, but I wish people would get it right!

Ok rant over lol. I always used to say Bostin a lot as a kid. I say our a lot as in our Julie or our Mom! As I am getting older I seem to be saying Bab a lot and I say Ar instead of yes a lot too!

My Dad doesn't like the Brummies, despite living in Birmingham since the late 50's, so I never really said much about it as a kid but now I am older I am proud to say I am a Brummie! I am a proud Birmingham City fan and chose my club with pride because it carried the name of this great city that we live in (that and I am mad about the colour blue lol)!

Hi Frank and Welcome
I couldn't agree more about our accent. Although I haven't lived in Brum for over 35 years now, people still recognise my roots as being from there. I don't consider that my accent is strong, but I think there are many ways that people can detect our origins. Dad came from Aston and Mom from Garrison Lane(Dad supported Villa all his life and Mom the Blues for obvious reasons bless 'em)
I warm immediately with anyone who has the slightest West Midland drawl, so look forward to hearing from you again our kid!!!
Lynda

Hi Lynda, thanks!

I bet the conversations were good in your house on local derby days! lol

Of course it is just my opinion about how people outside Brum do the accent but it does annoy me so!

Another proud Brummie here too. Like Lynda, I haven't lived in good old Brum for 30+ years now but it's still quite obvious where my roots are. I know what you mean about people trying to impersonate the Brummie accent tho & it coming out as something quite different! Who was it that said "often imitated never duplicated"......was it our Jasper??

Thanks Dolphie!

Thanks Lloyd although I wonder if that article was actually written by a Brummie at all?! The only times I have heard people saying things like yow (you), wun (one),
uv (of), und (and), moest (most), as been from my Dad or relatives/locals when I have been in Wolverhampton. I certainly never say pRRobebLay (proberly), RResunt (recent), impRRoov (improve), buLLRRingg (Bull ring), eLo (a lot), pRRoid (proid), gRRayt (great), sawss (source), or citays (cities) like they have shown! On that page it also says "Don't forget to roll the 'r's and try not to vary the tone too much" yet I have found that people from the Black Country seem to do that a lot more than Brummies do!

Also I have not and I don't recall anyone speaking like that when I was in school either, or growing up, and I have lived here all my life! Maybe its just me and I don't notice how I/we talk because I/we talk like it anyway (if that makes sense!) but I still think the Brummie accent gets misinterprited too much by outsiders!

live in anglesey n/wales leaving nechells 1970 been in anglesey over 38yrs, and still got my nechells accent, i`m very proud when people remark and say you have a lovely accent, i goes nechells girl and proud ,

Don't worry me blue, nobody can speak like a Brummie, only those born in Brum can.
The others only think they can, end of story

Good for you Pinky!

It don't worry me Alf, just annoys me. I am proud of being a Brummie, happy of how I speak, and think those that try to do our accent just sound very silly!

I was born at Marston Green Hospital and lived at first in Handsworth and then Small Heath. I have a mom (not a mam or a mum), our kid brother was always 'bab', I stick 'mind' on the end of sentences, do say 'yowm orlright ar kid' and being called Andrew and christened at St Andrews church no prizes for guessing i'm a blue.

Where i come from as a child we used to go to dudley zoo. But when we got to dudley they called it duderlay zoo!

The only fake brummie accent that amuses me is Jeremy Clarkson, but then almost everything he does amuses me.

Having traced my family back to 1800's I was a little disappointed to discover that my oldest ancester that I can trace was born in Manchester Lancashire in about 1815, but never mind i still consider myself a true brummagem lad.

I don't live in Brum anymore, but everyone knows where I come from.

I am exceedingly proud to have come from Brum.

researching REELEY - can anyone help?

Yeah, you're right, most of what you delineate are Black Country idioms...but, the excessive drawl is rather a new feature - just lazy speech, I suppose.

I agree totally with the first post. I keep being told I DON'T have a Brummie accent - by people who then do a Wolverhampton accent to prove their point!!! Equally annoying are the 'Birmingham is awful' brigade. (Normally based on sightings as they pass through New Street on the train) Birmingham is the best city in England! Karenanne
