Passages, Alleyways Gulletts and Snickets of Old Brum

It is between Union Street and Union Passage, next to WH Smith. Most units are To Let.
Was under scaffolding at one point last year.

A nice view dated 1946 of old Station Street from the Market hall before the MR Bus Station interceded...

And back in Winson green, this shows Villiers Street in 1977, a narrow Road that ran up to the rather ornate Gate entrance to Winson Green nick. Both gone now.

This looks interesting, if anyone remembers it to confirm the legend..? BRIGHTON PLACE, Duddeston.

The legend is of course correct, and I have seen this photo before, but it was pointed out to me on another forum that the terrace was in fact the correct one but in fact as usual it has been misnamed by the photo journalist and the correct name was Vauxhall Terrace. As can be seen here on this map.

An area that I don't think has been covered on this thread yet is Harborne. Here is Albert Walk that ran from Albert Rd to Harborne Park Rd quite near to the end of the High St. This end of the Walk comes out opposite the Kings Arms public house said to be haunted by the ghost of a young boy who once lived there. The last time I was down that way the pub was boarded up.

Oh yes, Nice one Phil, I remember it well. Bought my first car from a dealer just round the corner, did you know this one too? Pitney Street, Vauxhall?

Brilliant, didn't I read some time ago on the Forum ( can't find the Thread now) that you had two identical photos of the same place ( in Hospital street, New Summer Rd/Row?) that mikejee and you solved eventually, and wasn't it named Brighton Place? Or am I going diddly again?

Dennis

Yes I know the Pitney St photo, In was enquiring some time back as to what the car was that was parked up. I thought the back fins were a little too long to be a Zephyr, but that what the main consensus was. I think I can give you a little tip if it is a photo of the Nechells area then you can bet that it is on the "Gosta Green through Duddeston" thread. As for the two photos of New Summer St or Hospital St I was asking which it was because I had two photos of the same location with different names.

Dennis I knew Pitney St (it,s still there) almost opposite Harris Coal where I worked from the age of 13 used to go there 1 hour a night sticking stamps on the bills 5 bob a week. This is another veiw from Gt Francis St The empty building was the Post Office where I took the bills for posting I notice the Letter Box has been removed awaiting demolition. THe length of Pitney St is what you see in your photo Dek

Cheers dek, five bob a week for sticking stamps on? Nice work but I bet your tongue was a bit gooey after that? I loved post offices as a child. My nan let me make 'stamps' with a sheet of paper and her sewing machine with no thread in. Just made the perforations. Heaven. And I loved the stamper thingy when they banged the ink pad, then marked you off as paid or acknowledged in yer book. It was the anorak gene kicking in pre school even. No wonder I became a right train spotter.

And here's another one you will remember...NECHELLS PLACE

There are six or seven of these in a short run off Pershore Road in Selly Park, most backing on to Pebblemill Playing Fields.

This one eludes me. Sounds like it might be good with Apple Sauce Avenue....anyone know of this delightfully named Pig Sty Alley?

Dennis that,s a strange angle of A.B. Row the building on the right looks like the side of Saville Gordons if so the street opposite would be Duke St. Can,t say I remember that Temple and yet I must have walked passed it hundreds of times on my way into Town. Dek

Duke Street?? You sure Dekka? It looks like the side building on the right might be the old Market Hall. I've marked where I think the Bogs might be on the 1902 map, and therefore the blighted building on the corner would be at the Prospect Row and Brueton Street junction - was it an old pub I wonder? There again I might be looking the wrong way! Help! Let Phil or mike referee?

Yes Dennis you are right Brueton St not Duke St but i,m sure the Building used to have Saville Gordon on the front. Dek

A better view of J Saville Gordon's offices in the 60's, that was previously Gosta Green Market. The road opposite was Brueton St with the Castle Inn on the corner.
