Parents of our parents.

Baz - Are you referring to the photo of my granddad, Thomas Hanson, who was in a group of 3 men? He was the one with the hat and cigarette. Can't find the photo at the moment as all the photos I have put on seem to have disappeared.

It sounds like the correct photo, but there are 4 men. Granddad is on the R/H side.

Hi Baz

I have just found the photo of my granddad. You are right, there are 4 men in the photo, and my granddad is on the r/h side with hat in and cigarette in mouth. He worked as a foreman carpenter on the huge house building programme that Birmingham Council were working on all along and on both sides of the Yardley wood Road, from Swanshurst Park through Billesley, past the Common, eventually including the Haunch at the Valley out to Yardley Wood, Highters Heath and Warstock. I am not sure of the date of the photo but would imagine it was in the early 1920's.

Jean they are lovely photo's and I am so lucky to have two tins and a large box with photo's in of both sides of my family. Jean the larger one did not attach for some reason. Jean.

Here you are as promised . It would accept the other copy of the Smiths but it has got this one from the book .
The guy on the very far left observing the work going on in the lock is Grt Uncle George Henry . He had face cancer by this time sadly .

Hi Wendy I was having trouble uploading . I have got all this stuff recently with the help of cousins . I didnt know it was all documented in a book . All this set out from my quest to find out what my nan looked like . She raised me till I was 7 years old and I was always upset because I could not remember her face bless her .
Oh I shall put up on more of Her in her pinny with My dad and Aunty Cath at Her wedding to Cliff Mc Dade . This was taken in 72 Willis street Nechells . Nan couldnt get the day off work for the wedding so she nipped out in her dinner hour in her Pinny . She worked till she was 70 !!
:)
You were lucky to have all your photos . I had to beg and borrow these :)

Jean thanks for posting all your lovely photo's and love the last one of you nan in her pinny on her lunch break. Pete had no photo's of his grandparents until I posted something on the forum [long story] and from there came up photo's of his moms parents. They are the only ones he has but am so glad as are his brothers that these turned up. Jean.

Jean our memories are very special . It keeps these dear ones still alive in our hearts . They say time heals but we still miss them dont we . oh I have found the sister photo to my nans lunch break and I am in it at only 3 or 4 years old. One day I shall morph the 2 photos together to have me in the same photo with nan :)

It took me quite some time before I could go through my photo's and it was joining the forum that encouraged me to do so. So glad I did and wish to thank the members who have improved them for us. Jean.

Lovely photo's! I have a lot of photo's but I still get upset by the ones that are missing. I remember my cousin telling me of the old photo's of the family her Dad threw away. She still had a brilliant collection and when I visited her I always took my digital camera to take copies. She sadly passed away suddenly in 2007 aged 62 of the scourge of our family a massive heart attack. I still miss her as she shared my interest in family history. Cherish your photos and put names and dates on them. One of the best days I remember a few months before my Mom died in 2004 was sitting with her asking who all the people were in the box of photo's she had. It started a lot of memories for her and a lovely day for me.

Wendy some of ours are missing too the ones that I remember but no one knows what happened to them.. Especially ones of the fair in Sutton Park. I too sat with mom not long before she died and she went through all the names of nans neighbours in Franchise street. I wrote them down and still have the list in one of my tins. Jean.

Morning Catsclaw. noticed that you have a Jim Craythorne in the wedding picture - my mothers family were called Craythorne. Lovely pictures to see. Miriam.

My Great Aunt burnt all our family photos and the family bible to stop her husbands children by his first marriage getting them. She regreted it all the rest of her life.

Oh I also wanted to say that Dad and his family (the other side of our family) had only one photo of their brother who was killed in Burma. When my godfather died we were left loads of photos and letters etc, and most precious of all a photo of John Francis. There were several of my Dad as a small boy. Oh joy of joys to have them.
Amanda

Hi Al Yes he married my Aunty Violet . His brother is also on the Photo . Are you related to them ? Stephen Craythorn is also related . It is his Uncle .
Perhaps there is a connection Jim .
I love it that we keep old Birmingham alive in this virtual world . What a night mare for poor older people living in Brum now . My heart goes out to them . xx

View attachment 53818hi Lloyd i was looking at what a fantastic job you did of tinkering with the photos and was wondering whether you would mind doing this photo of my mother for me ...i would be most grateful if you could as its the only photo i have of my mom when she was 18 ...with my greatest gratitude kindest regards bowdler

I've put a few photos back in earlier parts of this great thread. Here are two new ones - My Dad's Mom Ellen - she was as stern as she looked - I kept out of sight out of mind. She came from Atcham in Shropshire I remember her accent. The second photo shows a younger view of her with her sister Maude.

I am also going to put my old photos on , we shall not be beaten by these people who have attacked this wonderful site and I shall endeavor to try to find as many as I can of my old Brummagem pics .
So I shall start with My mums Mom and dad John Thomas Clarke or Jack as he was called . Now he signed up to the pioneer corps in the May of 1940 and went home on compassionate leave on the night of 21st November 1940. He was in the house only about 2 hours , just bathed the kids and put them to bed . My mum was 9 . The others age 7,5 ,3 and new born . The eldest because he'd had brain trauma , Tommy age 11 was allowed to stay up . He was playing about in the baby's pram .
They lived on the 1st floor of a maisonette on Nuklands Croft Glebe farm . Well it was a direct hit . Tommy was blown to pieces and My Grandad died only hours after . They never found all of Tommy so her was buried in his grandads coffin . My mum and the rest of the family were buried for 9 hours , she kept singing so that they could find her .
As their mum could not cope all but the baby were sent to the Isle of Man to an orphanage . They werent even told that their dad was dead and they suffered such terrible cruelty by the religous sisters . Mum tried to write home but her letters were censored and the parcels her mum sent to the children were put into the tuck shop and sold .
Time and time again I wish I had known my grand parents . They had a really hard time in the war and It is a cliché now but we must NEVER forget how hard it was for these people . Its odd but this all came out because I saw on the news tonight how the NHS are treating the elderly in hospitals .
Any how I have wandered a bit . But I never had a grandad but Im still proud of him .

Regards Jean
Well the bomb came out of nowhere and he said 'thats for us ' and dived over the pram to protect little Tommy . It

Ps I tried to put the photos on of my grandparents but I cant . I have not got a URL to post them from . But I shall leave their story on here . :)

I earlier put a photo of my Dad's mom, here is one of my Mom's mom - Ada Elisabeth, she lived in Tower Street Aston. She was mild mannered and gentle.
