Hello folks.

I have just been looking at the 1871 census for Greenway St. The OXFORD ARMS publican was JOHN OXFORD, 45, b Southhampton. He is listed as Builder & Victualler. So my question is... was this pub named after John Oxford OR was this just a coincidence ????

if he was a builder and a publican did he build it and name it after himself lol what year was the Pub Built and yes it probably is just a coincidence Maybe :)

Does the Oxford Arms have a street number. None of the directories (up to 1888 anyway) list it by name, as so often happens. The 1898 edition doesn't list the street, so it must have been built between then and the 1873 edition which doesn't list any licensed premises. John oxford isn't listed by name in the 1873 edition, but a john Oxford is listed as a jeweller in the market hall in the 1868 edition.

Hello Mike,

On the 1871 there is no number given for the Oxford..BUT...I would expect it to a low odd number as it was so close to the Coventry Rd..& the opposite side of the street starts with low even numbers....to be honest I am not sure when Greenway St came into existence so maybe other half is not far off with the possibility that John Oxford built it himself !!!

Next to the Oxford , in Greenway St was a Costermongers.

Of the back houses behind that, I'm pretty sure the one nearest to Coventry Rd was 1/3 ( 1 Back of 3 ) so I would expect the Costers to be No. 3, and the Pub No.1

One rather peculiar thing in the 1878 edition is number 75, which is just after Arsenal st, which is a beer retailer operated by a James Greenway.Other beer retailers in that year were Joseph Weldan at no 47 , and Henry Shaw , who then combined it with his coal merchanting at no 112

Hello , i have just come across 1871 census which shows a Herbert Barton living at Oxford Arms Cheapside is this the same pub as in greenway street

No, Greenway Street is Small Heath near Blues ground. Would love to see a photo of the Oxford as i used to use it i the seventies.
 
I used to use it about that time also. Was the Gaffer's name Collins? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Being on the corner with Coventry Road, could it not have been 'numbered' as Coventry Road?

I remember the landlady was called Bridie and husband Frank? and they had two daughters and the husband used to hover around in the background, can't remember surname but i think he was English and she was Irish. A very basic but friendly pub,had a smashing juke box and good Ansells Mild!, not sure if that rings any bells:biggrin:.

This always makes me think of the juke box in the Oxford...
