this info from a family tree on ancestry fits the quarter of birth jan ...i guess it could be him...census years and war records are also on ancestry for this man

When James Owen was born in April 1882, his father, Edward, was 37. He married Mary Ann Shephard on 31 May 1909. He died on 1 May 1915 in France at the age of 33, and was buried there.

Address from pension ledger info. The above James died May 15 not the James I'm looking for (he survived the war). 1882 birth the only one I found that could be for him

Peter
ok peter that rules him out then..its a bit of a mystery ..not quite sure where to go from here..did you get the pension ledger from ancestry ?

thanks jan i found that 21 and wondered if the date of birth was wrong...so he was born in 1877 not 1881/2

Many thanks all, problem solved. The Llewellyn name from my original posting is his sister Elizabeth, married Herbert Llewellyn 1893. So born 1877 not 1882. Father Reuben mother Ann.

Peter
thats great then....peter you probably already know this but there is a tree on ancestry with photos...one of them shows williams sister sarah with her young son george..

Thanks to your great help have now completed (after a little more research) James's background and thought you might be interested to know about it. James enlisted in 4th Bn. Worcestershire Regiment (Militia) aged 18 years 5 months (given age). To Regular Army 6th March 1900 (RFA) Short Service aged 18 years 9 months (again given age). On both gave his trade as labourer. He extended his service with the colours to 8 years on 1st April 1904 and the extended once again (to 12 years) 13th November 1907. 1911 census serving with 144th Battery RFA in India, aged 29 and single. Discharged termination of service 5th March 1912. served for 8 years 152 days in India. On 12th August 1914 James would once again enlist with the colours joining the Worcestershire Regiment (Pte. 9187) aged 32 years 93 days (given age). Labourer by trade. To France with 2nd Bn. Worcestershire Regiment 11th November 1914. Wounded in action 13th May 1915 at Richebourg (GSW to the head). Transferred and served with Durham L. I. and Hampshire Regiment . Interesting to see he gave false age on all service records that would suggest he was born 1882 (the original birth date I was trying to find on). Must have been about 14 when joined Militia. 1881 and 1921 census records show 1877 to be correct though. Interesting military life he had.
Again thanks your help much appreciated

Peter

If he joined the Militia in 1900 then he would have been 23 so he took 5 years off his age.
In Aug 1914 when he claimed to be 32 he was actually 37
Based on born 1877 and the dates you put.

(Apologies but I was a Maths teacher).
