I am writing a reference book on UK saw makers; can anyone direct me to information about this company (in the trades directories from 1886 onwards). I would like to know the names of the partners, and the years they were in business; and was there any connection with Alldays and Onions (car makers etc)?
thanks a lot

From the birmingham directories
1888-1900Onions & Co. saw, gimlet & file manufs. etc.Deritend wks, Floodgate St.
1888-1897Onions Joseph, saw manufacturer &c. see Onions & Co
Onions and Co disappear between 1905 and 1908. Joseph disappeared and presumably left the co. &/or died between 1897 and 1899. Have been unable to find an entry for Joseph . In 1908 the site, where it would appear that the firm was, is a council school, and this is shown on the OS map just after that date. (c 1910). I am unable to find a Joseph Onions in the1881 or 1891 censuses who would fit the one in the directory

Hullster I hope that you will tell us when your book is published. My g g grandfather was a Birmingham sawmaker & I have yet to find out much about his trade. I have long been curious about it.

thanks to all replies - been on hols.
The info about Joseph O is the kind of info that one unearths about similar saw making firms in Sheffield - a one-man band calling itself "& Co". Will add this to the entry in the book manuscript - likely to appear in 2011 - will certainly post details of it when (WHEN!) it eventually hits the streets.

I have a mitre from them, the makers stamp is difficult to make out so I used a magnifier.
