On the 11th Hour of the 11th Day

Here in Ireland wearing the poppy has been fraught with difficulties over the years. For many decades somebody wearing a poppy out in public would at the very least risk verbal abuse or possibly even assault, in certain parts of the country it might have even cost them their life. In recent time the peace process has improved things greatly and it is a more multi-cultural society over here. Wearing a poppy here is now much more accepted and a lot safer than in the past.

At least four of my relatives were lost in the Great War, all brothers too. Two Great Uncles served in the Second World War. I attend Remembrance Day ceremonies here in Dublin and I do wear a poppy which everybody should be allowed to do if they so wish without the fear of intimidation or even violence.

My goodness I never knew about that. Great to hear things have improved over the years - in that respect at least!
I hope you can wear your poppy safely -it's wonderful that we are all so proud to wear them!

Signed, particularly as Poundland have forbidden staff wearing a poppy, excuse is that they must not wear any adornments to their corporate clothing, conclusion,Boycott Poundland.!!:upset:

Would love to come Claribel, but we have a rugby match that week - luckily, all the teams are usually keen to have the minutes silence, although it can be a bit fraught getting it together, it's quite moving to see the youngsters observing it together.

It is a brilliant sight seeing the youngsters and British legion members, the standards and the Pipe and Drum band.
I live across the road from the Legion and it is quite an emotional moment when the parade leads off headed by the band.

When I read about Poundland banning poppies I wrote to the company for an explanation.
Today I received this reply.
Mr Pritchard,

There was an issue in one store in Northern Ireland over the weekend where our dress code policy was interpreted by one of our managers. We wish to reassure you that the wearing of poppies has never been an issue and many colleagues choose to wear a poppy with pride. Our dress code policy will in future expressly allow the wearing of a poppy.

Poundland apologises for any unintended offence that has been caused.

Kind Regards
