Old street pics..

podgery

On my next series of photos I plan to do Coventry Rd from Bordesley High St to Elmdon Airport, it will be going through Hay Mills although I'm sorry I don't have a photo of Arthur Rd. You might see one or two old sights you recognise though.

hi carol
yes indeed thats a real gem where did you find that one then; i remembe the taveren right up to the very end ;
the question i want to asked is what is the name of the pub facing directly ; i myself should recall it as i only lived yards from them but i just cannot get my tongue aroundjust yet ; i know i will kick myself when some one spits it out an d this pub is still standing and been boarded up for years
great stuff carol ; answers please ; astonian ;;

Podgery and Astonian, I was lucky to borrow a book on Birmingham from an ex mayor of Birmingham and in it were some wonderful old photos. I would have loved to keep the book, but unfortunately had to hand it back.

Re #867 Hi Phil, Sorry to disagree with you about name of #1 photo I think this is The New Crown And Cushion although it was the oldest one of the two pubs of the same name on the Birchfield Road and not the Saddlers this pub was down a side road of birchfield road ( used to drink in saddlers in the late 60's with an old pipefitter mate of mine tommy smith ..

Still great photo's though Phil

From 1949 Kellys for Aldridge Road. I wouldn't call Aldridge Road a side road, but you are right, it isn't Birchfield road:

12 Ingley Harold, dining rms
14 Pullinger Horace Alfd hairdrssor
16 The Saddlers' Arms P.H. Chas. Edwd. Blewitt
20 Breeze Mrs. Eliz. shopkeeper

Pete,

Please do disagree with me, as I keep explaining I know very little about the north of Birmingham and I am only guided by the information that comes with these photos. So unless it is pointed out to me I go on suffering under the delusion that what I have posted is right. Now is the pub in the photo not on Birchfield Rd at all? if not I will remove it. I would be glad of any information you have as regards it's name and location so that I can amend it in my files.

The Pub in the photo is the The new Crown and Cushion which was on the Birchfield Road ( if still there ) it was opposite the Old Crown And Cushion although this is the newer of the two Pubs .. If you were travelling towards The Scott Arms from town the old crown and cushion was on the left and the new was on the right.

The Saddlers was down a side road by the school which I now belive Aston University is on this site ??? Regards Pete

Pete

This is The New Crown & Cushions at Perry Barr it doesn't look the same as the pub in the photo. Are you sure it is not The Saddlers on Aldridge Rd as Mike says? It may have been taken a little before the time you used it.

Without a doubt it is the Hay Mills Tavern that was demolished to build the retail estate on that end of the Small Heath Highway

Phil, really enjoying our trip from Lancaster Place down Newtown Row etc., on to Birchfield Road. I notice one small error,on post 867 photo 2, The Orient cinema was actually on the High Street. Birchfield Road started after crossing over Six Ways.

Yes thats the crown and cushion on birchfield road, the saddlers i knew was down the side road the other side of the school in the back ground and if you wald on down that road you would come out on wellhead lane. the only aldridge road i know is from the boars head at perry barr on up past the drakes drum and college up to and over queslet road past the old hornes and the cat and fiddle and on to aldridge ...

Regards Pete

re#880 Hi Phil, Thats the New Crown And Cushion OK.The Saddlers I know was in a road the other side of the school that you can see in the background. the only Aldridge Road that I know is the one that runs from Bulls Head Perry Barr up to and over the queslet road past the old hornes and on to Aldridge and the only othet pub that i know of is the Drakes Drum across the road from the college

Regards Pete ( mind you it is almost 40 years since I headed south !!!! )

The pub labelled The Saddlers in Phil's photo is indeed the Old Crown and Cushion. There's been a lot of controversy about which of the two C&C's was 'old' and which the 'new'. I was dragged up round there, and I can tell you that to my father's generation the small C&C was always the 'old' C&C as it was the first of the two to be built. The large C&C on the other side of the road is, I believe, the second pub of that name on that site, but the original pub is long before my time. I bet I've started something now.....

Also, the Orient Cinema was on High Street, not Birchfield Road which doesn't begin until Six Ways.

Thanks Big Gee for clearing that up about C&C ... But can you tell me the name of the road were the Saddlers Arms , I thought it was just off Birchfield Road by the School used to be now Aston University..

I think rather than clearing anything up about the C&C, I've probably started a debate! I'm only going on what my old man used to say, when he went for a pint - he'd always say the 'Old' C&C, meaning the small one on the right-hand side of Birchfield Road heading out of town.

As far as I can remember, and I'm not 100% sure, The Saddlers was on the corner of Franchise Street and Aldridge Road.
Someone on The Birchfield Road thread cleared this up, I think - was it G G Jean? Anyway, it was before my time, and before Franchise Street was blocked off between Aldridge Road and Wellhead Lane.

Sylvia,

Please forgive this poor thick Brummie from the south and sometimes east of the town, but no matter it's all part of the journey. As a matter of fact I tracked all the way from Sparkbrook to that cinema to see the 10 commandments when I missed it locally.

Big Gee & Pete

I think there is little doubt that the first photo at post #867 is the Saddlers arms at 16 Aldridge Rd Perry Barr Next door to Horace Alfred Pullinger Hairdresser. The photo at #880 is The New Crown & Cushions 353 Birchfield Rd Perry Barr. For one you can see the name on the front of the pub.

phil you are correct the pub on post 880 is the new crown and cushion..been in there lots of times more or less until it closed..also in that pic a nice little bit of birchfield road school..

Phil, you're right. And now I look a bit harder at Post 880 I can see Birchfield Road School. Sorry about the confusion, guys - I think I need a nice lie-down....

Bill

Thanks for that, that was brilliant. A lot of people and traffic on Corporation Street in those days. I only thought it was nowadays that it got congested. But then again a lot of the traffic was not diverted to the outskirts as it is now.

The next few sets of images run from Trinity Rd to Perry Barr, as before if you see any images that shouldn't be there please point them out.
