Old street pics..

img976.jpg

i pondered on this pic..some may look at it and say..what a slum but its quite clear whats happening here..all these houses have already been vacated and partly demolished..the furniture that folk did not want to take to their new homes have been taken out by the council and dumped in back gardens...i have always been a great believer in the fact that it was not the people who were unfit and turned houses into what were labelled slums but that the properties they lived in.were unfit..in fact i object to the word slums full stop..

Hi All,
Phil, thanks for these very interesting and evocative journeys. The pic of the Brighton Arms on Coventry Road brought back some good memories of 40-odd years ago. Is it still there, does anyone know? You have a magnificent collection of pics. If you're looking for suggestions, Fox & Goose to Saltley Gate via either Alum Rock Road or Washwood Heath Road (or both, but that would be cheeky!), would be of particular delight to me. Again, many thanks.
Stan

Hi Stan

As far as I am aware the Brighton Arms is still open today, well at least it was when Google were doing their photo shoot (see photo) Alum Rock Rd & Washwood Heath Rd would be an interesting project. I'll have a look and see if I have enough photos of either to come up with a reasonable journey.

Thank you so much for the Ludlow Road photo, great. I hope someone can put more of Alum Rock and Washwood Heath up. I grew up in Alum Rock when it had lovely little individual shops.

Thanks Phil. the memories flood back Hay Mills before the road widening. Willie Young's general store, had a tap for paraffin needed for the storm lamps to stop[ the outside toilets freezing in winter. The Adelphi cinema known locally as the flea pit.
The Bulls Head, I remember the horse trough just outside the front entrance, and Friday night was customer fight night usually ending up as a mass brawl in the middle of the Coventry road , occupying large numbers of police from the station now the Bill and Bull

Lyn, many thanks for posting the latest batch of photos, I think one or two captions are wrong though. On post 9 showing Clifton Road, I am sure the shop Priests was on the corner of Clifton Road and Upper Sutton Street, again Post 11 I feel is Upper Sutton Street towards the junction of Victoria Road, perhaps Ray Barratt will know as he lived in Clifton Road.

I'm playing catch up...Priests was in the Potters Hill end of Clifton Rd.Sylvia,on the corner of Clifton Rd.and Upper Sutton St.was a newsagent,the Paragon laundry,a wall and The Crown pub.Alan is right about the cafe it was Uppper Thomas St.down by the Royal Albert.

Loved the old pics Lyn, these streets are so familiar to me, as a lot of them were my neck of the woods. Thanks for your efforts in putting them on for us to enjoy.

Hi Phil Great photo's i really enjoyed the trip down the cov road especially Hay Mills. When we came to Redhill road i was suprised that the redhill tavern wasn't there, I wonder when it was built? i have always thought it was pre victoria, thats how much i know.

Hi podgery

Yes I missed out the modern day Redhill Tavern, the trouble is I have to make a decision on what photos to post and what not to post for fear of posting too many.

hi phil;
many thanks as well from me along with the other members ;
firstly i lived along the rd from that pub ; and my wifes aunty and uncle was always in there that pub;they lived yards from it ;
and when you look at the picture you put up direrectly facing it across the rd was the other pub ; the plough and arrow
which was standing there then during that duration and still stands there you can see the dome of the pub
follow the adverting boards and its right at the end of it ;there was back rooms and upop stairs as well for enterainments even in those dayd
sadley it fell on the way side around the late seventys and early eighties as i sad i lived just along the rd and i can recall all the old little shops
and the guy whom had a little car parts and bike parts and repairs with his two little petrol and parfinnpumps outside the shop on the corner of george rd
if you go down there today ; you will when you pass it a little commutity garden with the frames ; well when my daughter was nine years old she wrote to the local councilor whom is in office now for them ;meaning the local little kids and her friends at only nine years old to asdked him could they have a play park
he came to our house and seen my little girl and said he will see what he can do and within three months he wrote and told yes we will build you a little park with a round about and swings ; my daughter is now married with her own kids whom are in the teenage years s and now shes wporking on the project ; wioth alot of traders and the council doing a save our island at the swan ; she as got tescos involved as well ;
i left cov; when they demolished rootes and buiolt asda as we was directley facing it at the time and they had smash and grabs every week end with out fail until they started to put security windows in ; thanks for the memory ; astonian ;;;;

Wonderful photo of Ludlow Road, Alum Rock. I lived in the newsagents shop which is on the corner of Alderson Road (the first corner shop following the photo from right to left). I lived there from 1965 to 1988. Looking 'down' the road towards Alum Rock Road you can see the stench pole on the left hand side. To my knowledge that pole was still there well into the 1970's maybe even later. I have some photos of the shop from the late 70's / early 80's, I will scan them and upload as soon as time allows.
Thanks to everyone for uploading these photographs, they certainly evoke some wonderful memories.

Rob.

Thanks WendyP and Bazzm. I have a lot of old photos on my computer.and will put them on this site when I can.Will try and fit them into place names.happy to oblige.

Thanks Phil my dad used the redhill tavern when we lived in arthur terrace. The memories you have stirred are great so keep posting.
