My parent were in retail and that meant school vacations and Saturdays were mine to as I wished. Living to the south of Birmingham I often liked to visit my grandmothers home - there were still some unmarried uncles and aunts also living in this large house at that time - her home was to the north of the city. Naturally the city was far more exciting than the rural areas to a young boy. One aunt, a favourite, (maybe because I got away with murder! lol) often took me to a faggot and pea shop opposite the library in Dudley Road. I loved that meal as we never ate in that manner at home.
Slightly off track, but still about food, were the oatcake shops in Stoke-on-Trent. These places made, in front of your very eyes, Staffordshire Oatcakes on a built in coal oven: delicious.
I have experience only of Staffordshire Oatcakes, but I believe the neighbouring County of Derbyshire also make them. I hope this doesn't develop into an 'oatcake war'. lol
