OLD BIRMINGHAM PHOTOS FROM STEVEBHx

Bob....I don't think Moss Garage was on the junction of Tyburn Road and the Chester Road, There was a Austin dealership on the junction of Kingsbury Road and the Chester Road facing the Tyburn house pub, named Tyburn Garage, my mate worked there and I work opposite at a auto electrician's called Gaedor.... this was back in the early 1970's ....
I think 'Tyburn garage' and 'Moss garage's' were the same company. The original Moss garage was owned by the Moss Gear company as their transport repair shop.

I too was an auto-electrician and remember Gaedor very well.

I have started to scan a selection of photos I call street scene, there may be nothing special but may be of interest to someone - there will be more corner shops and city centre views!!
First up 1157 Chester Road which is near the garage of the discussion earlier, this is 1968, bit of a misty day , there is a Wimbush bakery van on the right, just before the canal bridge is an old style roundabout sign and the cycle track on the left - did trams used to use it?1157 Chester Road - 68.jpg

This is the old Alexander Sports Ground Perry Barr in 1970, snowy day, you can just make out the gates of the Caravan sales land, see the turnstiles and the lights over the track, went to a school football game there in the 1970s stood in the stands - it was rickety then !!

123 Burlington Road, 1973, although the street sign says Mansfield Road, Outdoor Motors displaying one of their vehicles. I like how all the houses are spick and span, although I see someone has half heartedly written skins on the garage doors, and someone has equally crossed it out !

123 Burlington Road - 73.jpg

64 Victoria Street, 1974, before anything else I must point out the interest rate of the savings Certificates 11.33% !!
Houses on the right with metal framed windows, like the ornamental window and door frames behind the lamp post and the Ford Escort van. Now working from the right the first door you come to does it have a "Howell" poster in the window, I think Dennis was the MP for this area?

If the Wimbush van is driving along the roadway, can we assume that the carriageway to the left was once reserved for a tram track?

Wanna buy a Cambridge? 1 careful owner then 10 careless ones.
The only tram track (and correct me if I am wrong) on Chester Road between Chester Road Station and Castle Bromwich was where the 2 crossed it at the Yenton on Sutton/Birmingham Road. The tram terminus at Tyburn was before Chester Road. Can someone put a map out showing this spot please?

Bob

Finally 163 Warstone Lane in 1971, I believe the council took exception to all the signs on the building judging by the amount of red pen everywhere. Like all the curtains in the sash windows, are there a mix of houses and office / works?
Love the cobbled road surface and the cars - sorry but I couldn't resist.

Ref photo 602......The cars parked up in the distance are on the shared drive with Gaedor closest and a woodyard cannot remember their name, but later Tom Bytheway took over both premises.....Great Photo....., about 3 years before I worked at Gaedor...

On the 1970/71 map it is shown as a cycle track
Thanks Janice, I had always been told it was a cycle track but had the thought that it was the ideal location for a tram. Thanks also for adding the pictures to my photos adds another dimension.

The house on the extreme right is 123 Burlington Road. I had problems getting the right angle as the street is narrow. This view is from the opposite angle as it shows clearly the small building with the tiled roof is still there.

Tyburn house pub in the far distance. The petrol station on the left is where Tom Bytheway's service centre was, this is now Selco's.

I had an Escort van like the one in the pic. Mine was about as rusty as the Cambridge in a previous pic. One day I was driving down the Bordeley Green road when due to metal fatigue, the bonnet opened up, the wind caught it, wrenched it of its hinges and deposited it under the wheels of a following lorry.

I have gone back to 2014 so the hedge is low enough to see that the one house is still there. New windows and door.

137 New Street in 1976, a mixture of fashion outlets- Hepworths and Milletts, and above Raymond with his school of beauty, and a fine selection of fashion on the pavement.View attachment 154009
Thanks for this one...I used to have my hair done at Raymonds. You entered the salon up a flight of steps and looking down at you was a huge painting of 'Teasy Weasy' Raymond, founder of the shops. It wasn't cheap there and always took a chunk of my hard earned wages, but it was worth it to feel pampered! Never had my hair done by the great man himself though...obviously saved himself for VIPS!

Another location which may bring back memories for some, Gate of India in Bristol Street from 1975. Note the Music studios above the Fish shop, like the brickwork of the building and the weather vane on the building next to it. View attachment 154032
Used to regularly catch the 147 to Alvechurch at this bus stop, healthier than waiting in the Edgbaston St bus station. The chippy belonged to a Greek Cypriot family, the Elias's. Enjoyed their hospitality at a family wedding.

Worked around here 1970-2000 at GKN.

Knew Dave quite well. I worked in various departments over the years, mainly logistics based, but also in the agricultural products section.

Suffolk Street Queensway in 1974, the old and the new of the Alexandra Theatre, with Spike Milligan next week. HIFI shop and wine bar and a few half cars, Ford Escort & van and a Hillman Imp. You can also see an old style telephone in an upstairs window
