I was asked some time ago to illustrate a book on old Birmingham and the 'Angel' was one of the subjects. Painting attached. Unfortunately book never published. Eric

As always wonderful work, this is obviously the photo that you worked from. Staying on topic I have never seen or heard of the Crown in Deritend being referred to as 2the Old Angel" I have tried to find some information on the Artist H.Hatfield Cobley and have so far come up with nothing. Perhaps Eric being an artist yourself you might know better where to look or perhaps you may of heard of him?

Phil, the artists name was Hadfield Cubley and if you "google" him you get quite a bit of info. Try here https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/search/actor:cubley-henry-hadfield-18581934
As suggested in #4 he is better known for Scottish scenes with cattle. In fact, I think we had a print at home when I was growing up which was his or very similar to his style.

Hayley, I believe this particular 'Angel' was in Stratford Road, I did not realise there was more than one. Incidently this was just one of the 45 paintings I did for the book . Eric

Phil, the artist's name is Henry Hatfield Cubley, well known for his Scottish landscapes often with highland cattle and distant mountains, where he was born I do not know but he was British, funny enough I have 2 birth dates 1844-1902 and 1858-1934, which one is correct I do not know Wikipedia might know. The Angel was and still is (much altered) at the junction of Ladypool Lane (now Ladypool Road) and Stratford Road in Sparkhill. This is only a clip from Google, I dare say it's open again now.

It's nice to have the right name to work with Henry Hadfield Cubley 1858-1934 but I still couldn't find any background for the old angel other that he exhibited at the Birmingham Salon and the Royal Academy and that he possibly painted this picture of our old friend in Cannon Hill Park the Golden Lion at the same time. Sorry it's not a very good image and once the painting I titled The Old Lion.

I envy painters of the past surrounded by wonderful subject matter, I have to rely on old black and white pics mostly, you can't beat the real thing !! Eric
